I used to run BootVis back in teh day. It did seem to make a difference. My 64 bit XP starts up in under 10 seconds now though so I could care less about improving on that.

I really knew nothing of BootVis, until you mentioned it. But I found an MS article about it and this is part of what it said:
Quote:
About Bootvis.exe
Bootvis.exe is a performance tracing and visualization tool that Microsoft designed to help PC system designers and software developers identify performance issues for boot/resume timing while developing new PC products or supporting software.

Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.
EDIT: Oops! I should have scrolled up before posting. I see that this was already covered.

wasn't necessarily aware of its purpose, i just know that the first time i booted up xppro with bootvis i had a 42 second boot time, and after bootvis rearranged my boot files my time was shaved down to 35 seconds. so whether or not bootvis was designed for developers or end users, it helped me quite a bit, so i figured i'd post it cause bootvis is common amongst htpc ppl

so whether or not these "built in" capabilities actually exist, i don't know where to find them and bootvis helped me out a ton

I don't get it. Microsoft states it cannot increase system performance, then how does it? I tried running it and got errors both times. First was a BSOD, in which I had to reboot with "Last Known Good Configuration" to get back into Windows, then after that I got DCOM error..

I can only offer a speculation. The MS statement would be based on the assumption that everything in the boot sequence was as it should be, therefore Bootvis would make no change. But if something is not as it should be, then Bootvis would change it properly. I really don't know, because I just installed Bootvis yesterday, and have seen no change. However, I have a bad copy of XP and there is much wrong in the installation. Boot time on mine is about 2 minutes from power on, with or without Bootvis. I'm getting ready to buy a new copy of XP to do a fresh install and will try it then to see what happens.

If you like space exploration, you've probably already heard of Noctis, but here's the link:

Amazing game, if you can call it that. It's a pretty unique experience.

I gone through the first half of the pages on this thread, and though I have seen FireFox mentioned several times, I have not found Opera once. Even if you already know about it, they released 8.52 for Linux and Windows yesterday:

Actually Opera is releasing weekly builds now.

http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/

It's getting better and more feature-rich all the time. The latest build does have some bugs, but overall its neat being able to keep up with the development process.
