Default Low framerates...why???

Here's an interesting question I hope someone can shed some light on-

I have 2 boxes running Libranet 2.8.1 (Debian-based distro); same kernel (2.4.26); 1 is an Athlon 2000+ with 512 MB RAM and a PNY GeForce 5200 video card, the other is a Sempron 3100+ with 1 GB RAM & a PNY GeForce 550 video card. Both are running with dual monitors with twinview (both the video cards have 2 x VGA), and both are running the same nVidia drivers (6111, tho' I've tried 6629 & 5336 as well).

You'd think the Sempron box would easily beat the other in framerates, but no. GLXGears gives nearly 3000 fps on the Athlon box, and only about 750 fps on the Sempron.

I tried UT2k3 on the Sempron (in case it was just a glitch with GLXGears) but it's almost unplayable while on the Athlon it's smooth as silk.

I've updated the BIOS, reinstalled the drivers, messed with the XF86Config-4, but nothing seems to help.

It's not crucial as the Sempron is my work box (mostly DTP with OOo), so I shouldn't really be playing games on it, but it just pisses me off that it should smoke the Athlon & doesn't.

The 5500 card is just a slightly updated version of the 5200, so that really shouldn't make a difference- and I can't think of anything else to try.

Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong??? This is keeping me awake at nights!

Run glxinfo and look for direct rendering. If it says no you could have X libs with mis-matched versions, resulting in a performance hit. Do a backup and do some cleaning if this is the case.

There is NvAGP - the nvidia readme explains this including finding out which you are currently running. Whichever it is change it to the other and repeat your benchmarking (a reboot is a good idea when changing these drivers). The Sempron should do better with kernel NvAGP, especially if it is socket 754. Just that the kernel has to support this... so you may have to do a kernel compile.

Removing TLS files may speed things up just a tiny bit. If the above fails, search this forum for TLS.

OK, I followed all the suggestions in Appendix C of the readme, checked all the symlinks and libraries & everything seems to check out.

Here is the output of ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears (shorter than in the readme- could that be something to do with it?)-
$ ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears
libGL.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (0x4002b000)
libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x40099000)
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x400a6000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x40163000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x401b4000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x401d6000)
libGLcore.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1 (0x40308000)
libnvidia-tls.so.1 => /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 (0x409f9000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x409fb000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

I also added Option "NvAGP" "1" to the Device section of my XF86Config 4.

Still the same- still around 750 fps.

This is driving me nuts!
