Somehow they seem to have messed up the whole xv overlay issue. I just bought a
6600GT either, and now overlay YUV hardware scaling is missing all of a sudden,
although I had it on my Geforce2 and Ti4600. See also these threads

The comments to my posting indicate that it's a chip design rather than a driver issue.
If that's true, they really messed up their chips for us video and tv viewers, and
removed essential functionality.

I wrote to Nvidia to have this clarified. No answer yet, but if it's really the hardware
my card's definitely going back.

So we can wait until all applications are rewritten to make use of those extensions, just
because Nvidia chose to remove proper overlay support. No way.

Weird, my 6800GT has them all. Must of been removed with the 6600?

The 6800GT is an NV40 gpu, support has been removed in NV41+ GPUs.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but that means that people using the 2D opensource driver will not get decent xvideo support anymore, even if we wait for applications to implement an OpenGL backend?

EDIT: question below already answered

And yes, I too would like to know what the situation with the 6800 versus the 6600GT is. On my 6800 Ultra with newest drivers on a 6800 Ultra I certainly see
~(libber)6% DISPLAY=:0 xvinfo | grep -i XV.bright
"XV_BRIGHTNESS" (range -512 to 511)
"XV_BRIGHTNESS" (range -512 to 511)

Does that mean the 6600 series has it dropped?

EDIT: never mind the last question, I didn't see Thunderbord's reply.

[not dicted to you personally]

OK, apart from the problems for people having to use the OpenSource driver every now and then, another thing just occured to me:

If NVidia now requires videos to go through the 3D engine, doesn't that mean the 3D engine gets powered up, adding another 30 watts of heat and power consumption compared to the old overlays in the 2D engines?
