Default FX5900U to FX5950U Bios Flash

I've had an AsusV9950 Ultra 256 for a while now and have recently finally got my whole system cranking after flashing the Bios to FX5950U.

During this process I've tried both the AsusV9980U bios and Leadtek A380U bios and with both, sometimes I get a sort of faint crosshatching near the centre of the display (it goes away if I flash back to 5900U bios) - this doesn't bother me but does anyone know if there's a 5950U bios that won't make this happen AND be compatible with Coolbits? (see below).

As a matter of interest, it seems to me that Coolbits is not compatible with Asus bios - on my system there is DRASTIC slowdown in 3D graphics if I enable Coolbits while the card is running either V9950U or V9980U bios. Also, with Asus bios coolbits doesn't bring up the automatic overclocking option.

The system runs happy and shows the automatic overclock option with the Leadtek A380U bios.

My 3DMark03 score is now 6511 (6350 before the bios flash) and the temps are great - they are at about 70 degrees C immediately after playing HL2 or Far Cry or running 3DMark03 and otherwise sit at about 47 degrees C - prior to the flash it would sit at over 50 normally and be about 74 after 3D being under load. This is all with overclock set to automatic.

- FarCry runs sweet at 1024x768 with High and Very High settings and HL2 is also smooth at 1024x768 and high settings plus 2xAA (these games ran fine before too but are noticeably better now).

I think your card is not capable of running with 5950U bios. If u can achieve 5950U speed by overclocking, i suggest you mod your default bios to the same speed as 5950U.

I should have explained:
Asus V9950U is FX5900U
Asus V9980U is FX5950U
Leadtek A380U is FX5950U

The card is running fine with Leadtek A380U (FX5959U) bios and returning higher benchmarks with auto overclocking than I was getting with it in it's original Asus V9950U (FX5900U) configuration at the highest overclock I could get it to (because temperatures with A380U bios are much better).

My only problem is this slight faint crosshatch pattern that can be seen sometimes near the centre of the display - it's not really something that bothers me but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has this with a reflashed 5900U>5950U bios and if there might be a 5950U bios that doesn't do this on an Asus V9950U card.

I know all this. If you want a bios like that, i think you have to do it on your own. Try all ultra bioses and check which one fits you good.

I have modded my eVGA 5900 Ultra bios many times and I suggest you do that instead of flashing to a 5950 bios. If you wish, I can do the mod for you and send you the bios file.

Yes, Asus uses a proprietary bios that requires the use of their driver software to overclock the card.

I really urge you to try out my modded bios because I think I can do more for you that the 5950 bios. Trust me!!! Let me know if you are interested...

d2thez - YES PLEASE!! - I'm very interested and would definitely appreciate your help. I'm just about to head off for work and will pm you later (in about 12 hours) to organise it - or if you're willing/able to post a link to download it from then feel free :-)

Well when you get the chance, I have a eVGA 5900 Ultra bios I would like you to try. I want to see if that cross-hatching pattern is related just to 5950 bioses, or any other bios other than the Asus one. Let me know when you are ready.

To update anyone with an interest in this: d2thez sent me an eVGA 5900U bios which I'm able to clock up to 500 / 900 and get better performance than I had with the Leadtek 5950U overclocked as high as it could go (which was only about 490 / 880 ) - plus I don't have the crosshatching which it seems any 5950U Bios causes on my V9950U card.

Many thanks d2thez
