Default SuSE 9.2 2.6.8-24 Kernel Problem

I just updated my SuSE 9.2 machine for the 2.6.8-24.10 kernel security fix and now the 6629 driver will not work. It just says it can't load the nvidia kernel module when I try to start X. I had to load the SuSE version instead.

Anyone else have this problem?

Did you (re-)install the NVIDIA driver after upgrading your kernel or did you add a kernel module for this kernel to your NVIDIA installation (see the -K nvidia-installer command line option)?

I had a similar problem with an update because something went wrong and kernel sources were seen by my system to be a different versions than kernel itself. You should redownload kernel updates (also sources) and reinstall using rpm -Uhv.
Then you run NVIDIA installer that will try to recompile the module for your kernel.

PS: if you use SuSE updater you'll obtain an older driver but it's the easier way. With NVIDIA installer you must kill X server (or reboot in safe mode)

zander, I did reinstall the driver. More then once just to make sure.

afavini, I will try to reinstall the kernel and its sources to see if I had the same problem that you did.

What happens if you try to load the modules manually with `modprobe nvidia`?

Suprisingly I could load the module by hand (at least lsmod said it was running). Although even after I loaded it by hand the X error log still said that it could not be loaded.

Can you post the X log files generated in these two cases?

Hmmm, well I was either mistaken or I changed the behavior by installing the SuSE nvidia driver the other night. Anyway, I reinstall the nvidia driver just now to test it out and this is what happened. The module would still not load automatically, but after I loaded it by hand, X started. I have attached the two logs below.

Strange; I guess you'll want to check the `modprobe` configuration or have the system load the NVIDIA kernel module automatically at boot.

I finally got around reinstalling all the kernal rpms like afavini recommended, and everything works correctly.

Maybe there is a bug in YOU that is corrupting someting on the kernel update?

While battling disk problems on my Dell Latitude D800, I reinstalled and updated SuSE9.2 and nvidia 1.0-6629 several times and had similar experiences. If you install the nvidia drivers and don't reboot, you may have old kernel modules installed. When X won't start, try lsmod and remove anything with nv in its name, such as nvram.
Modprobe nvidia does seem to work if X still won't start.
