Default Incorrect resolution on Shuttle SN41G2v2

I have a new Shuttle SN41G2v2 on which I have spent days trying to get the NVidia drivers to work properly. I am unable to get the driver to give me the resolution and refresh rate I want (1280x1024 @85hz). I have no trouble getting the proper mode with the free "nv" driver, but the "nvidia" driver always gives me less than I want. If I get the right resolution, then it wants to give me a vertical refresh rate of 60Hz. If I try to force it to 85 Hz, then it doesn't give the proper resolution. I got the modelines that I am using by running ddcxinfos. Attached are my xorg.conf and two xorg logfiles, one with "nvidia" driver and one with "nv" driver. I am running Mandrake Cooker with kernel 2.6.8.1. I would stick with the free driver, but it has a lot of video artifacts on the screen and sometimes severe flashing. For a contrast, I have run the latest Knoppix on this machine and it gives me a stable screen at the proper resolution and contrast.

Here is the xorg.conf. This forum seems to only allow two attachments.

After further experimentation, the best resolution I can get is 1152x864@75Hz. Looking at the xorg.0.log, there seems to be a limitation in video bandwith that precludes higher resolutions, though the specs on the Geforce4 MX gpu say that it can go up to 1920x1440@75Hz, which is well in excess of my monitors capability of 1600x1200@85Hz. Is this video bandwith configurable? Does it have anything to do with the amount of shared memory assigned the the video, or is this something hard coded into this particular motherboard?

Hmm, I don't know if you're already aware of it, but there's a way to disable the bandwitdh check, look in the faq...

here:

Option "NoBandWidthTest" "boolean"
As part of mode validation, the X driver tests if a
given mode fits within the hardware's memory bandwidth
constraints. This option disables this test. Default:
the memory bandwidth test is performed.

and success?

I tried that. The result was extreme video instability at 1280x1024.

Bad....

also from the faq:
" To work around this, you can reduce the maximum refresh
rate by lowering the upper value of the "VertRefresh" range in the
Monitor section of your X config file. "

I don't want to reduce it. I want at to use the capabilities of my monitor. With my old system, with a ATI rage 128 card, I had no problem running at 1280x1024@85hz. I was able to get 1280x1024 on the Shuttle, but only at 60hz. My eyes don't need that! I haven't run a monitor at so low a refresh rate since the mid 90's. I should be able to use the resolution and refresh rate that the gpu is supposedly capable of, according to the specs.
