D3 was developed on a 9700/9800 for a while and it still brought today's graphics cards to their knees. I expect to upgrade my card for this game and UR3.

Well i expect Oblivion to come after the launch of the NV50/R520 .. so no worries . we'll upgrade either ways

Heh... D3 didnt bring mine to its knees. I played fine at 1600x1200 High Quality (8x AF). It slowed down in some places, but hardly brought my system to its knees... and my system isnt that fast

How much AA were you using? I'm talking max settings here, that includes AA/AF. Secondly D3 was programmed by God AND even then it had to skimp on alot of things [not alot of enemies on screen at same times, textures, no outdoors/water, etc]. A game running on the D3 engine that actually managed to use it to some potential would rape your system to the ground.

P.S. I beat D3 at 1600x1200 2xAA 8xAF HQ, anything higher and I would get unpleasant dips here and there [unless I overclocked and tweaked]. Still couldn't play it at max settings.

You never said anything about max AA\AF (or about any graphics settings actually )...

Its pretty obvious that we wont be playing Oblivion at 1600x1200 4xAA 16xAF with a 6800 Ultra. Someone said the game was being developed on a 9800, so its safe to say any card faster than that will play it just fine.

When I think of bringing something to its knees, I usually think low settings with barely playable framerates. If Doom 3 didnt run as fast as you wanted, then your extreme graphics settings were what was bringing your system to its knees... not the game.

Now I have to hurry and beat Morrowind before Oblivion comes out. Unfortunately, that seems quite unlikely. So far I've only finished Tribunal

There's still no release date set.

It's seems unlikely we'll see Oblivion by the end of 2005. I hope to see at least a big preview at E3

Even then! The environment is so vast and it's easy to get lost in the number of quests you're on. I'm barely into the main quest and I haven't touched Bloodmoon yet.

Oh come on, AA/AF is infered. Who the hell buys a $400 card and doesn't use AA/AF? This is a hardware enthusiast forum after all, not Martha Stewart's daycare center.

So let's see here, you're saying:

It isn't the game that killed your system, it's the game's extreme graphic settings that did.

Your logic reminds of a dog chasing it's tail.

My roommate Dave just doesn't understand and what gets me the most is that he's a hardcore gamer/nerd, too.

I tell him all the time that I'm superficial: if a game isn't pretty enough, I just won't play it, regardless of the story (with SOME exceptions that is). I just feel like my $411 investment is being wasted if every gaming moment isn't straining it to the maximum potential (or as close as I can get it) at all times. He's still got a GF4 Ti4200 and games at 800x600 for everything. He says I should just lower the res to that and turn off all AA/AF to get the best performance.

I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't spend my $411 to play at 800x600 w/out AA or AF.
