There's something about those trees...the canopies look ...well, like someone used adobe photoshop and made a really detailed part of a tree but then just used the image copy brush (what's name of it again) and went around and used that same patch of tree for the whole tree, some of the Cyprus trees look like that, really fake looking, its like every layer of the tree's leaves and branches imitate the exact same one at the bottom of the tree.

I already linked that first one... thats such an awesome pic! And the picture of the woman is so real looking. Very impressive compaired to the last game. They have REALLY improved their realism artistically. No more cartoonish people

I agree, thats one of the first things I noticed when looking at the very first shot of trees in this game. I really hope theres a way they can work on the trees to make them more realistic looking. They could easily fix it by randomizing the shape of the limbs\leaves better (since Im pretty sure the forests are generated, not built by hand). Hopefully performance isnt too much of an issue though.

These are by far the most detailed forests in any game ever, but the patterns in the foliage are just waaaaay to obvious and stick out like a sore thumb. If it can be avoided, it still looks great. But it deffinitely takes away from the realism.

BTW, that shot with the minotaur is probably the best Ive seen as far as foliage. I dont really notice much of the repeated patterns at all. Hopefully this is a more recent picture than the ones that have the patterns.

What I just found out, which surprises the hell out of me, is that they DO use SpeedTree (A very detailed and advanced terrain generator). Err, wtf are the guys at ST thinking when they made this type?

Example, look at the Cyprus tree in the left side towards middle of screen, in fact, look at the entire shot:

Now look at what SpeedTree has the capability of doing:

edit: here you can see them trying to pull the same thing they're doing for ESIV

but here's that same tree at another angle, why can't all angles look like this or like every other tree they've made? It seems only certain trees have this wierd graphic.

Why then, do the trees in Oblivion look so...fake?

The trees in speedtree look pretty fake in motion as well I must say - the only really impressive part of them is the sheer scale. As someone else pointed out, performance is the likely reason the in game ones don't look as good. Remember that Oblivion has to be a game, rather than a tech demo that generates trees. I personally think they look awesome for in game trees, and am looking forward to the game immensely.

Ridiculous DOES not have an 'e' in it. It comes from "ridicule" and has less than nothing to do with the colour red.

Foliages and grass in Oblivion are made with pre-rendered textures with some alfa trasparecy.

Same method used by the Unreal Engine 2 (When the demo of UT2003 came out DM-Antalus was really impressive to play at full detail, but the Unreal 2 alpha leak one year before was even more so)

OH, BTW, this month GI has some cool looking new screenshots never seen before: a castle, some NPCs, a new dungeon...

Have you seen them by chance ? Here where I live GI is not published nor imported.

Three new screenshots added:

This one is interesting: http://www.elderscrolls.com/images/a...v/obliv13B.jpg
It reminds me of Doom3 + offset / parallax mapping

Drooooooll........

If only I would have upgraded my computer AFTER I learned of Oblivion.
It's the only game, in which after hearing the anouncement, I would have waited another 6 months to upgrade and gone with whatever Nvidia is planing for mid 2005. Morrowind was (and still is) my favorite game I've ever played.....ever. I just pray that I'll be able to play ES IV at 1024. I'll settle for no AA and AF if it'll work on my Barton 3200+ and 6800NU.

But yeah, I agree with some of the rest of you. A bit too much Light bloom. The screenshots are a bit too smudgy and soft.
