Getting Geforce 6600GT to Work with Suse 9.1 (64 Bit Version) - Fixed!
Procedure to get Geforce 6600GT to Work with Suse 9.1 x86_64:
1.) Install Suse 9.1 (64 bit version) it will show your video card to be a Vesa Framebuffer card - leave it that way for now.
2.) After installing go into Yast -> Remove and Install Software -> and install the following: 'kernel-source', 'make' and 'gcc'
3.) Do Yast Online update and update everything
4.) Even though later on you will be installing the Nvidia 6629 drivers - Go ahead and use Yast Online update to install the older 5332 drivers as I believe this tells the system (Suse 9.1) to work with Nvidia drivers.
5.) edit /etc/inittab file and change from 5 to 3 runlevel
7.) Login as root
8.) Make sure your in the directory where you downloaded the 6629 drivers and type: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6629-pkg2.run -q
9.) After the driver installs go ahead and reboot, you can type in the command:
"shutown -r now" without quotes, in order to reboot from the command line.
10.) Configure Sax with the following command: sax2 -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!) just accept the defaults - no need to enable 3d or anything. (The Nvidia driver will automatically set 3d acceleration even if not set or showing enabled in SAX.)
11.) Edit the /etc/inittab file and change from 3 to 5 runlevel
12.) Reboot again: shutown -r now
13.) when your in the graphical run level 5 you can now use Yast to set up your video card. Change the video card from a Vesa Framebuffer device to a Geforce 5900.
15.) Go back into Yast and setup the monitor according to the make and model of your monitor
17) Run glxgears and opengl games - should work! At least for me it did :-)
