Default AGP doesn't work under kernel 2.6.10?

I'm having troubles getting AGP working with my A7N8X Dlx motherboard and GF4 Ti4200 card:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Disabled

AGP initialization failed, please check the ouput
of the 'dmesg' command and/or your system log file
for additional information on this problem.

I have been able to get it working, but ONLY if I move back to kernel 2.4.26 (from 2.6.10) and use NVIDIA-6111. My xorg.conf has manually specified NvAGP as 1 (use the NVIDIA agp driver) and I have completely removed agpgart and nvidia-agp from my running kernel by recompiling.

The strange part is that everything looks normal. dmesg states nothing out of the ordinary:

Disabled Privacy Extensions on device c0571ea0(lo)
IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling driver
eth2: link down
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
eth1: no IPv6 routers present
eth2: no IPv6 routers present
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-6629 Wed Nov 3 13:12:51 PST 2004
process `host' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT

I'm currently using driver revision 6629 because 6111 will not install properly under 2.6.10. I have applied the grsecurity and loop-aes patches, but other than that the kernel source is clean.

To give you some example as to what a huge difference AGP support makes, glxgears shows a 400fps jump when it is enabled (~3280 -> ~3680).

I'm at my wit's end. As I mentioned, AGP support is completely disabled under character devices in my kernel config so that the driver will have no choice but to use its internal code or none at all.

Please help me out

@Rupan: can you attach your kernel configuration file?

Certainly. I assumed that it might be a problem with my kernel config, but it appears that I do not have the expertise to find it. This file was copied from my running kernel as follows:

uuencode /proc/config.gz config.gz > 2.6.10-config.txt

Thanks for the help!

One side note: you will get some missing symbol errors when you load that config unless you have the latest grsecurity and loop-aes patches applied.

# CONFIG_MTRR is not set

You'll need this option enabled for AGP to work (and to get decent performance, in general).

WOW.

Thank you!

AGP is now enabled. glxgears now shows 3800 fps. That's almost a 9% increase!
