hmm, have you "modprobe nvidia"? before you started X again. if so then can you please attach dmesg's output? + Xorg.log?

What's the output of `dmesg` right after the X startup failure?

Humm.
According to the "nvidia bug report", your kernel contains the rivafb module, which conflicts with the nvidia module. If i guess right, you just need to recompile your kernel without the rivafb support.
I don't know if simply removing the rivafb module from /lib/modules/your-kernel-version/somewhere/rivafb.o could be enough...
But i think the safest way would be to recompile your kernel.
Don't focus on the IRQ, some video adaptor don't claim for one...

regards, Seb

The rivafb driver is harmless unless loaded, and there's no indication that it's loaded on AxeL364's machine. The kernel reports that it's unable to route the IRQ for PCI device 01:00.0 (the only NVIDIA device in the system), which indirectly causes the NVIDIA probe routine to fail. AxeL364 says he resolved this problem and is now seeing a different one.

@AxeL364: judging from the `nvidia-installer` log file, rivafb isn't statically linked into your kernel, nor does it appear to be loaded; you shouldn't need to rebuild your kernel. As to `dmesg`, just execute that command from a console.

This till looks like an IRQ problem; please make sure that the "Assign IRQ to VGA" option is enabled and the "PNP OS" option is disabled in your BIOS; you should also try booting with the noapic kernel parameter.

On a side note, you have vesafb enabled, which might cause problems along the way; if you want to be safe, you should probably disable vesafb (with the video=vesa:off vga=normal kernel parameters).
