Palladium and "administrative rights" for Microsoft over your computer and media library come to mind.

No... Longhorn will apparently use 3D acceleration on the desktop, but no actual 3D desktop.

Looking at the first picture, it says that this is only temporary UI for the alpha builds. It says that the final UI is "being overhauled to support a new 3D, video-driven UI". Not sure what that's supposed to mean since they are also showing new additions to the XP start menu.

it's supposed to. whether MS changed their minds, who knows.

also the file structure is supposed to be database driven, but we've heard that before too.

MS usually makes some wild claims about integrating awesome new tech, but they usually have trouble integrating it correctly.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Longhorn's "3D accelleration" is more like how OSX uses hardware accelleration to render its GUI.

well, i don't know how OSX works, so...

however, i read previews about Longhorn(forgot where) that said, for example, that every window was supposed to be a texture.

i remember this clear as day. now, whether the preview was correct or not is another story.
