Default This is driving me crazy! (driver installation)

I know a lot of people have probably seen this before but I did a search and I tried almost everything suggested by this forum and I still don't know. I'm a noob, its only been a couple of days since i installed mandrake.

I'm running Mandrakelinux 10.1
Geforce4 ti4600

here the error log:

Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> License accepted.
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: No)
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; this means
that the installer will need to compile a new kernel interface.
-> Kernel source path: '/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-12mdk/source'
-> Performing CC test with CC="cc".
ERROR: If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
you either have configured kernel sources matching your
kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
on your system.

If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the appropriate nvidia-installer command line option.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

this one is strange... how did you install the sources? several kernels are provided with mandrake, and if you installed the kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12mdksmp instead of kernel-source2.6.8.1-12mdk, for example, you can encounter problems. Is your /usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1-12mdk folder present?

FYI, I'm running a Mandrake 10.1 Official, with a GF4 ti4200 (nearly a 4600 ), and had no problems installing the 6629 drivers, using the default kernel. I only recently reverted to a patched 4496 driver, since I wanted a correct support of my TV-out, but the 6629 ran fine (without twinview).

could you attach your full nvidia-installer-log, and "ls -l" the contents in your /usr/src folder?
