No, the amount of memory does not add up in SLI . so you are playing on 256MB actually.
if you want a 512MB .. you can still get one of those new 6800Ultras with 512MB

See that is what I do not understand. If you can share the load of the GPU core using SLI why can't you also share the memory. That makes absolutely no sense. I am willing to bet that when ATi gets their MVP or AMR or whatever they are going to call it finally released that they will make good on all of the things NVIDIA left out of SLI. I bet that ATi's version of SLI will "actually" be twice as fast as a single board in every game and also share the memory of both cards. So if you have 256MB on each card then you have 512MB total of usable memory. If ATi does this then there would be no reason to buy a SLI rig. Don't get me wrong I love my SLI setup, but there are a couple things like this memory thing that rub me the wrong way.

Because the data must be written on both GPUS. The Cores require there own specific setup and they share workload. But all data is written like its a single GPU.

A little OT: Do you think it'll be possible for next gen cards that uses SLI to get over this limitation & write data to both GPUs & thus increasing the amount of memory ?

That would be nice, but really, the core/pipeline/memory speed is really all that matters

Did you hear how many people applauded when nVidia announced their 512mb graphics card? meh, give me 32 pipelines any day of the week

Well not sure , but game develpoers might start to use more of the VRAM in future games .. like for storing uncompressed normal maps & stuff like Doom3 did.
this way SLI builders wont need to spend even more money than what they already spend just to get the best of the 512MB cards.

idles at like 30-33 and peaks 45-50...don't think I've had it go above 50, course there are 2 120mm fans in the front, one in the back with the radiator, a 90mm in the top and 2 in my enermax psu. Still hella quiet. I used Arctic Silver 5 and followed the instructions word for word, very simple kit, Thermaltake's Big Water comes with the mounts for K7, K8 and P4. I may run another pump and cool my 6800 Ultras with it...but I don't know.

Insipired by other user in nvnews .. i made my own extra cooling for the Dual 6800GTs.
i already had unused Vantec Spectrum fancard .. so i wondered why not putting it for a good use ??
so heres what i did (see pic) .. i attached the fan card to the Shark's case side plate which fitted easily & started blowing air to the 6800GTs ..

the result was great .. GPU1 idel before ~ 66c , after ~ 62c . not bad at all

How well are you guys getting your 6800 Ultras to OC? I tried pushing mine a little and it barely does 435/1.15 A mear 10MHz OC on the core. Stock cooling.
