Default Good idea... bad idea?

OK... on my 2nd computer im running an AMD XP2700+ on a Soyo KT400 Ultra with a gig of PC2100 DDR. This computer is my linux computer that I use for hosting and playing around with.

Here is the issue:
I have an XP2700+ CPU in there... but because of the PC2100 ram... it slows the CPU down to a 133 FSB which makes it run at 1.7ghz (speed of a 2100+ cpu).

Here is the question:
Because of this... would it be acceptable and perfectly safe to up the Multiplier on the CPU to like 14.5 or 15 to match the original speed of 2.17ghz of the XP2700+ CPU??? Or is this acctually majorly OC'ing it or is it no OC'ing at all and just distributing the FSB/Mult ratio differently??

If this is not an option I guess I would have to sufice with a small FSB OC (as much as old PC2100 can take) with a small Mult OC (as much as a CPU with a stock fan could take) to try and make up some ground. Let me know! Thanks!

The multiplyer is unlocked? Well in that case it should be perfectly fine, it would just allow the cpu to run at its normal clocks.

I would try overclocking the 2100 to 2700 (166mhz) memory specs first though

First thing I tried ... system would not even post. The PC2100 could not take it I guess.. although I could try relaxing the timings more.

All Bred's are unlocked are they not?

Only if you use them in nForce2 boards. I don't think it's possible on any other chipset.

I think what the deal is with the NF2 is that you have access to all multipliers in the bios. There is a wire trick you can do between 2 of your cpu pins that should enable the diff multipliers on a non-nf2 board. I had a crappy KT880 board before and I had to do it for my unlocked TBred. All I did was take a small piece of wire, cut it to 1/4", pulled out a single thin strand about the size of a hair. I then took tweezers and bent it into a U shape and inserted it into the socket where the CPU pins go in. Then I put the CPU back in. You will get a small amount of resistance, but it should be ok if the wire was thin enough.

edit - found the link, what I did was to unlock all the multis under 12.5

CPU Pins

Looks like you will need to do the Socket view, then jump across a few pin-holes to get the one you need. I hope it helps/works for you.

Just to let you all know .. apperently my XP2700+ is completely unlocked. I changed the Mult to 16x and upped the FSB to 136 so I was able to reach 2.176Ghz which is almost exactly the same speed as the defualt XP2700+

Cool deal.
Did you do the multiplier in the BIOS or by CPU pins?

well the CPU was unlocked stock .. so I just used the bios to change the Mult.

I have the same board in my kids' rig, and have OC'd my XP2100+ with it quite nicely. This board apparently unlocks T-Breds' multis.
You'll get more performance out of a FSB OC, but if that's not possible with your RAM, the "poor man's OC" using the multi will help some as well. Just gotta keep the RAM/FSB sync'd for best performance. Can you OC the RAM at all? If so, find your max stable OC of the RAM, sync your FSB w/it, and then raise the multi to your desired CPU clockspeed. Otherwise, find some cheap PC2700 & throw in there.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just read you were able to up the FSB a bit...

^^Not to mention I was not trying to OC it but just match at least the rated frequency as I dont want to invest any money into my linux box (for say faster ram) as its mostly just parts from my old gaming computer and im not looking for the top notch performance im trying to get out of my gaming machine. I just use it to host FTP / UT2k4 / HL2 servers and it works great for that Thanks for the help anyway though.
