Because not everyone has a DVD Drive yet, I know acouple people who have nice gaming machines but have not gotten a DVD Drive because they never needed one on thier PC.

HL2 and POP were both released on DVD aswell as CD. I have them both on DVD, Also Farcry.

Yup, it's pretty much just because many people don't have DVD drives yet, and the publishers don't want to cut out a potential userbase. Since you should only need to install once, they figure it's not a big enough issue to lose customers over. Over in Europe though, almost all games are on DVD and don't even have a CD version. Usually what I do is copy all the files from the CDs to my harddrive, then burn them onto a DVD-R. Makes it much easier to reinstall the game later on. Although most of the games require you to have the first CD in the drive to play, but at least you never have to disc swap while installing again.

The way I see it if someone's computer is so old that it didn't come with a DVD player chances are their video card is to old to enjoy the game, second who can't afford a DVD player. $25 for a Sony DVD player

I hafta agree. I have a friend with a 3.0 P4 and a 9800XT yet he doesn't have a frickin DVD drive. He doesn't have much money right now but he has in the past and still didn't get one. I don't know why people are so cheap when it comes to their optical drives.

Not about not being able to afford one is that my friend never needed one so why spend the money on one? He's still using a 40x CDROM from his old P2.

Goth, My friends PC is more powerful then yours, its not about age. If all the games required a DVDROM drive, He would buy one but since he doesn't need to buy one, why should he?

It's not the people who have GTs and Ultras that don't have DVD drives, it's the ones using Integrated Intel Extreme graphics and whatever other components came with their computer when they bought it. PC games are not targeted solely toward enthusiests (if they were, minimum requirements in general would be much, much higher).

It's getting better. Alot of games now come out on DVD or CD. This will go on for a while, then the game companies will start to slowly kill off CD's. It's a question of how inconvienieced (try spelling that when you just woke up, ouch!) are you willing to be before you're willing to pay for a DVD drive. I have one and often buy the DVD versions, but I admit to buying the CD version of UT2004 (7 CD's!) because I wanted to be able to use it on all of my computers.

I think the best way to get people to adopt DVDs would be to take a movie-like approach (some games are), put some extra crap on there. UT2004 is a good example, the DVD version had another DVD with some howto make maps videos and stuff. That's the way to get people to buy the DVDs.

Do you guys remember before HL2 was released, they had a form you could fillout and tell them what hardware you had. I did that and also checked the results. Around 75% of the users who participated had Dvd player in there puter.

I prefer DVD versions of my games. I never found a dvd version of UT2004 :-/ ... way too many cd's

I think it's time for developers to move on to Dvd format as consoles did.

Heck even Dvd burners are very cheap these days. I recently bought a Lite On. Works great yet there are normal Cd burners that costs more.

It's getting there. More and more titles are starting to have DVD versions released, it's just a matter of time before everyone will see the light. Especially with the popularity and price drops of DVD burners, I see DVD roms getting closer and closer to being the norm.
