Goth, My friends PC is more powerful then yours, its not about age. If all the games required a DVDROM drive, He would buy one but since he doesn't need to buy one, why should he?
Hopefully with in the next year he is forced to upgrade.
I'm sure your friend is the exception to the rule.

I don't see why this should be the case. DVD readers are almost as cheap as floppy drives these days. Hell I just saw one last week at fry's electronics on sale for $8 without so much as a rebate, so in some cases they are cheaper than floppy drives. About two months ago my brother bought two DRU-530a's for $12 each from staples with a rebate, and those will even burn + and - dvdr/rw's.

Meh, I just import most of my games from Europe. Did that with HL2 and FC.

Yep. The UK has apparently had DVD-releases for years now, in fact I've heard that it's actually quite difficult to find some games on CD!

Every computer you buy at a major retailer has a DVD drive in it, OR DVD Burner, so I don't think "not enough people have DVD drives" is a good excuse for publishers.

Of course, we could just go back to floppies, as EVERY computer should have one of those.

You'd need about 2430 floppies for a HL2 install, assuming each CD has a full 700mb on it. That would be a LONG day/week/month...

You'd be surprised how crappy some of the cheapy computers made in the last year are. Some don't even have AGP ports, let alone DVD drives. It's a small percentage, but since Valve made sure (or at least, they SAY they did) people can play Half-life 2 on a dial-up connection which only accounts for about 3% of their userbase, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to make the game also availible to those without DVD drives.

And BTW, some newer computers, especially laptops, don't have floppy drives

WTF? D3 is on DVD? Riddick too? Where? I'll glady buy them if they're DVD [and if they come in a DVD case, none of that cardboard crap].
