Unhappy Well... it's not working

I did as you told me but it didn't work...
when I edit the XF86Config-4.. in the modules section i only have Load "dri"
and Load "lt4 (or something, don't know what it was)
so i put Load "glx" there in top of the other lines

and under the device section it says

identifier "Generic VGA"
driver "vga"

i can't see any driver "nv"
well.. so i tried change the driver "vga" to driver "nvidia", exited from su and started X

and the x wouldn't load.. i came so far that i saw a grey background and the cursor
and nothing more happened... i just sat there.. moving my cursor around on a grey background...
i had to do a reset on my computer and reboot..

so now i can't even start up X with the Generic drivers

any suggestions?

I am sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. Unfortunately I cannot claim to be any sort of expert on this matter. I just know what worked for me... Like I said in my last post, you now know everything that I know about setting this up. It worked wonders for me... If I were in your shoes I would do some googling around to see if somebody else had a suitable answer to this problem. Or better yet, see if you can find the 2880 drivers instead. I have seen a LOT of posts and problems with the 2960 version...

Post Don't Use The RPMs

I've heard people say in the past that nVidia can't write decent RPms and that they don't work at all. Ergo, I've used the tarballs every time, and I've had no problems whatsoever.

I've had the same problem for some time, Really annoying.
Everybody telling me my XF86config-4 was wrong.
adding a line and modifying another isn't the problem!!
The driver just wouldn't start.

I am not an export. But what simply helped for me was to run drakconf
I changed the videodriver to a xfree86 3.x.x ( unsupported don't know what ) driver. saved, and changed back to an unlisted 4.x.x driver ( like vga or nv or whatever ).
I hitted ctrl+alt+backspace after saving and i finnaly saw that nice nvidia logo i wanted to see so long ago .

Default Finally!

i got it to work!
i had to install some other geforce driver instead of the Generic VGA driver...
i just used XFdrake to select the geforce 3 card and save the information without testing (i know that if i try 'test setting' it won't find my graphics card because i have a geforce 4 and not a geforce 3)

so i saved the information, exited XFdrake and edited the XF86Config-4
and now i found all the settings for nvidia card like driver "nv" and the lines to remove (load "glcore" and load "dri")

i saved the config file and started X
and the nvidia logo with the eye started up..that felt very good i must say

thanx for the advice

Default Ok, lets get an example.

Well, guys, please read the doc from start to end!
You must REMOVE the load "dri" line.

Mandrake 8.2 starts to get old, and its driver for nvidia does not include the lastest geForce4.
So, it's why by default, you have only generic vga detected.

=> Ok, you may have difficulties to understand what nv says in their doc.

So, I suggest you to take nvidia sample config-file.
It must be found here (if you have correctly installed nvidia package):
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0$ ls -latr
total 276
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 28 11:11 include
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 28 11:11 .
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5404 Jul 9 11:20 license.txt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 7287 Jul 9 11:20 XF86Config.sample
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 106713 Jul 9 11:20 README.DE
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 102837 Jul 9 11:20 README
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 11679 Jul 9 11:20 NVIDIA_Changelog
drwxr-xr-x 772 root root 20480 Aug 13 16:41 ..

(please, have a good look at README file)
Then, make a backup of your own XF86Config-4 file, copy this XF86Config.sample in place of your XF86Config-4, change it if needed (take care at your display frequencies if it is a 'non-standard' one).

It may be better.

If it still doesn't work, or if you think it's too hard for you, send me your XF86Config-4 file, I'll get a look at it, change it if needed, comment it, and you'll stop asking things about it pretending it doesn't work!
;-)

(But try it by yourself first, you'll learn more.)

Hi Guys , I just figgured it out !!!

Try this :

After or before you've installed NVkernel + GLX from the RPMS

Go to your BIOS and enable " Assign IRQ for VGA "

After that edit your XF86Config-4 as usual.

Do a reboot , login as a normal user ... thats it .

Have fun !

Don't know if this will work fine for you too but try it , you have nothing to loose .

CU,

Default I fixed mine like this...

There was a link called "X" in /usr/X11R6/bin pointing to XF86_FBDev, there's also an "X" link in /etc/X11/. I put both of these to point to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 and then X loaded the new nvidia driver (I saw the nvidia logo at X startup). I hope this helps.
