Default Re: 6600 GT AGP vs 6800...

i have a xfx 6600gt agp and love it. while most people say that the 6600 can't play at high resolution i'm play CoD, CoD UO, BF42 (and a bunch of mods) all at 1600x1200 with all details turned to high or highest.. the funny thing is i get higher fps at those resolutions than i did at 1152x864, not sure why though.

my system specs are an asus a7n8x deluxe, amd 1700xp (overclocked to 2.004 ghz 12x166fsb@ default voltage), 1 gig pc2700 ram, 2x wd hdd (1 20 gig and 1 80gig), a 8x dvdrw and a 48x cdrw, thermaltake 430w psu.

i haven't bought half life 2 yet but i have played the demo. i played at 1152x864 with everything at the highest detal level without any problems. i guess as more dx9 games come out i won't be able to play at 1600x1200 but for the games i currently play i'm more than satisified.

As to higher resolutions being faster, I saw something like that in a review. They said that the drivers automatically dropped aa and af from 4x8 to like 2x4, making it run faster.

but really even if that was true, who would need 4x8 with a resolution of lets say 1600x1200

At Digit-Life, in their December 3d digest, here's some comparisons.

A64 3200+ S754, 1GB DDR400 etc.

FarCry 1024x768 4xAA 16xAF
6800nu - 58fps
6600gt - 40fps

Doom III 1024x768 4xAA 8xAF
6800nu - 57.8fps
6600gt - 37.4fps

Not to mention that the 6800nu has more overclocking headroom than the 6600gt would ever dream of.

Average GOOD overclock on a 6800nu would have to be around 400/850, that's 23% on the core speed and 27.2GB/s . Average good overclock on a 6600gt would have to be 550/1100, that's 10% on the core speed and 17.6GB/s bandwidth. Which would you pick? If we go by these results from Digit-Life, the 6800nu is clearly much faster at 1024x768. People here are saying but yeah the 6800nu is better at higher resolution. Well guess what, you put on 4xAA 8xAF which what you'd expect to game at with a new card, and at 1024x768, the 6800nu spanks the 6600gt. In fact, from those results, I would say that Doom3 at those settings is unplayable with the 6600gt, whereas it more than is with the 6800nu.

Did I mention that if we include the headroom of overclocking and the possiblity of more pipes, the 6800 could probably increase its lead by 10% even when compared to an overclocked 6600gt.

Leadtek supposed to have an extreme version of the 6600GT that comes clocked at 550 on the core, and I forget what's on the ram In any case if I were buying a single or two for SLI, I'd hunt that up. Otherwise I'd grab one or two BFG 6600-GT OCs.

to me the decision is a little harder first the 6800 is faster but i would like to see a recent comparison with new drivers we all know the difference that could make, second the 6600 has purevideo, third smaller board, if later on you wish to go the small form factor route this is a plus, with the 6600 you virtually have what you need if you where to build a home entertaiment unit, i myself will go with the 6600gt which has more to offer than just a few more fps

I have seen benchmarks of the 2 cards what you say is TOTAL AND 100% BULL****. I have NOT heard any **** before. NO, I think you made that up, and you are an idiot. the difference is only MAXIMUM 5 fps, and the 6600gt OC's at 600/1200. that is 20% if I am not mistaken, and once I get my new cooler I am willing to bet my balls that I will be able to OC more.

I will post a benchmark so that YOU can see and enlighten yourself. and PLEASE, stop posting BULLCRAP

true, the 6800 CAN have 16 pipes, but are you willing to pay 100$ extra just for a "Maybe"? I am not. also, I am verry content with my buy. 100$ less for 3fps less is A-OK with me.

there are many more. just use your head and search the web.

Talking Re: 6600 GT AGP vs 6800...

Sorry for the double post. I have seen more reviews comparing the 2 cards, and the biggest difference I saw between them was 9fps in conditions when the aa and af were max, AND that only goes for the MAXIMUM fps, not AVERAGE.
