Post X server aborts during GLX init. RH9 1.0.6629-pkg1

I have a number of Gateway E4000 machines running RedHat 9 that I am trying to upgrade to new video cards. I removed a working MX series Nvidia card from the first machine, installed an Asus V9999GT card and ran the "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run" command. The drivers appeared to install correctly (after first removing the previous drivers) but the X server aborted upon reboot during GLX initialization. I tried reinstalling the same drivers with no change in results. I've tried multiple XF86Config configurations with no change. I've gone through the README file and all libraries, modules, links, and devices appear to be correct. I've reviewed a number of entries in this forum and found at least four people who seem to be having the same problem:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&highlight=GLX
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&highlight=GLX
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&highlight=GLX
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...&highlight=GLX

Unfortunately I don't seem to be seeing a clear solution in those links. Since I have a number of machines that require this upgrade I would prefer not to reinstall X on the machines.

I've included several attachments:

nvidia-installer - The log file from the driver package installation
nvidia-bug-report - Output from the bug reporting script
XFree86 - /var/log/XFree86.0.log
nvidia - some supporting docs including ls of libraries

I have the attachments formatted both ways. The ones with the .doc extension are Unix format, the copies with .txt are DOS format.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

PS. This is my first post and I didn't realize that we were limited to five attachments. I was able to upload both versions of the nvidia file but the others are in Unix format only (with, of all things, a .doc extension). The nvidia fiile contains a significant amount of the information in the other files. Sorry about the extensions.

Since posting the previous information I've reloaded the machine from scratch. This allowed X to work with the Vesa driver. I then reinstalled the 1.0.6629-pkg1 driver package with the same results as obtained previously (X server aborts during GLX initialization). By removing the "Load glx" statement from XF86Config I can get the X server to come up without aborting but KDE then aborts when trying to initialize.

Please attach the nvidia-installer.log file from your current configuration, as well as the nvidia-bug-report.log file generated after attempting to start X with GLX and without GLX.

Sorry about that. They should be there now.

Does the problem go away if you pass the --force-tls=classic command line option to the .run installer?

No it doesn't fix it. It does change it though. Now, instead of the X server getting a signal 11 and aborting, it just hangs after the "Initializing extension GLX" line in the log file. X could not be aborted with <ctl><alt><bs>.

I don't know if it will help but the machine I'm testing this installation on is loaded via RedHat's jumpstart functionality. I can send you the jumpstart configuration files which should allow you to exactly duplicate the software environment.

Strange. Do you see the same hang if you replace the graphics card you were using previously, but continue to use 1.0-6629?

Uninstalled the 6629 drivers, swapped video cards (card is now MX200), reinstalled 6629 drivers (no options on the install). X aborts at the same place with the same messages it did with the original card. X server caught SIG 11 during GLX initialization.

I'm sorry, I should've been more specific: I was interested in what happens with the old card and 1.0-6629 installed with --force-tls=classic.
