Actually this has to be one of the most advanced graphics engine on the market currently. I would even dare to say that "most" aspects of the SCCT engine are even more advanced than what the source engine of D3 engine has to offer.
i think with the d3 engine so much effort was focused on one aspect, lighting, that everything else was secondary. the lighting engine in d3, imo, is the most advanced on the market today. i understand that it has limitations and is was implemented without the use of soft shadows, but it represents lighting more accurately than other games on the market today ala scct, far cry, ect.

with that said it doesnt look fantastic. scct looks amazing. i know alot of doom3 fans rant about how other engines use tricks to create descent lighting. well, right now the tricks look MUCH more convincing.

id like to know if anyone else thinks the guys over at 'id' jumped the gun on lighting. kindof over shot the runway.

in any case, this game looks fantastics and has excellent gameplay to boot. i dont know if i would go as far as saying its the most advanced engine out there, but imo its the best looking right now.

I agree ! You know..in the architectual workfield there's lotsa apps which compute and visualize day and night lighting for buildings, offices, houses etc.
Such 100% correct computational lighting kind of overshoots the purpose of game lighting ;

- atmosphere
- style of lighting
- the effect on the artwork
- the effect on the performance

In short ; game lighting/ shadowing should serve the game's purpose, not the other way around. CT's stuff is in service to the game, though i am still of opinion they need to make it run a bit faster on hardware like I have.

I wouldn't say that this game looks better than Doom3, although there are certain things that look great (soft shadows, HDR). Doom3 looks better in certain aspects to me, particularly the models (they look higher res) and the bumpmapping in Doom3 is done far better. There's just something about it that looks much more realistic. Other than that, I would say that they are pretty close, but Doom3 still gets the nod in my opinion...

Doom3 isn't as fun IMO. Blasting reptitive monsters over repetitive terrain gets tiresome after the 300th zombie. Replay value is nil, now Splinter Cell's replay value is awesome, so many different ways to beat a mission. Graphics in SP CT are used a lot better than in Doom3, d3 may have an edge technology-wise, but the way CT has implemented everything makes it amazing. Take a minute to look at the tents in the rain, it's beautiful.

The demo is not beta but final code. Disable HDR and it will perform noticeably better.

I've been doing some reading today and from what I can tell they did a spot on job with their 1.1 support. It really does look excellent. I have changed my mind and I will probably buy this game even if I can't play w/SM3 effects. It should still look and perform very well.

I'd like to have the SM3 effects but perhaps that will give me a reason to replay this thing once I get a next gen. video card.

Disable HDR will give you only just 3fps increase, hardly any difference, see the posts here in Benchmarking Central section.

well on my system my framerate increases from 24fps to 40fps at 1280x960, only by disabling HDR.

This is normal since FP16 blending HDR should decrease your performance by around 40-50% fps.

The ODD thing is ; to make a super slick fraps screenshot i set everything to MAX and enabled all sm3.0 options @ 1600 x 1200. I thought that it would bring my 6800GT to crawl at about 2 to 8 fps ;

suprisingly the game hovered about 15 fps.

XP1800's reasonable fps score might be becuz of the 6600GT high core clocks.

im sorry if this was already noted ( i havnt read the whole thread). has anyone noticed that at the lighthouse door if you try to look under it with the optic cable the game crashes. its like theres a hole in the map cuz after a hang the second time i tried it i was able to alt tab back into the game and even though it was frozen i could see under the map. wierd.
better patch that up before the release.
