I also got that when I first installed the drivers. After I rebooted the computer, it was fixed.

Bah .. the demo runs like crap in SM3.0 mode unless you go for 1024x768,noAA,4xAF .
in SM1.1 the X800XT-PE runs much better & thus higher min fps .. the Hardware shadow mapping feature did increase the performance a bit for the 6800 but still not enough to catch with the X800 .

i think i'm going to play the full game on the X800 then & leave the SM3.0 for a next gen card . at least its very playable there in SM1.1 @1280x1024,4xAA,8xAF .

It's not really SM3 that's slowing the game down a lot. It's the HDR/VDM and HQ soft shadows. All of which aren't SM3 specific.

I was originally refering to those features actually , but you are right ! i switched to SM3.0 & disabled all these features & guess what .. my performance gone up a bit further !
in the opening scene @1280x1024,2xAA,8xAF :
6800GT@U , SM1.1, No hardware shadow maps = 28fps
6800GT@U , SM1.1, Hardware shadow maps enabled = 30fps
6800GT@U , SM3.0 = 32fps
X800XT-PE , SM1.1 = 37fps

specs in sig .

again thanks for pointing that out .. i didnt try SM3.0 with all features disabled so i didnt know about that !

Yep. Switching from SM1.1 to SM3(only) increased my fps by about 10 in some places(where there are a lot of light sources). And by atleast 3-5 fps in most other. Also, there are some precision errors with SM1.1. You can spot them in several places, but these precision errors aren't present in the SM3 mode.

Yeah that indeed increased the min fps for the little while i played the demo .

hmm this gets me in hard position into choosing where to play the game .
go for the higher performance in the XT or the slightly better IQ in the GT ? .. i think nvidia's new drivers will decide that . i'm using the beta 71.24 now BTW .

What do you guys think ? :

Would it be a good thing if Ubi Montreal made a public press release and explain the sm1.1 and sm3.0 only thing ?

I think it would be good, becuz that would void all assumptions, so we can delete all those CT shader model this shader model that flamewar threads.

Imo it would also be a good thing if they gave a yes or no on the question if the final code will run more smoothly or not.

Demirug said this at the Rage3d forums:

SM2.A and SM2.B did provide enough slots but missing branching. This force the chip to execute to many instructions for every single pixel. A SM3 chip will step over this unused instructions. I am not talking about dynamic branching as we allready know that a NV4X need large pixelblocks to make this run well. I am talking about static branching.

The next problem with some of the shaders is that the vertexshader need to send 10 vectors to the pixelshader. SM2 (all variants) only supports 8 vectors. It is possible to reduce this number because many of this vector values depend on the position. In this case you can only send the position but than you have to do all the calculations in the pixelshader. This will slow you down again.

You can work around this problems if you use an other concept but this means that you have to write extension for the engine and the toolchain you allready have.

With the 75.90's installed, whenever i changed settings in the Advanced Options i found i had to exit the game and restart it once or twice to get changes to work properly, especially HDR, the 75.90's seem to be not as 'bug free' as other beta's like the 71.81's.
