Good question, I'd like to know this as well.

You're going to be surprised with Doom3. It's not going to be much more than like ut2k4. In fact, maybe less than HL2 even. Doom3 looks great mainly due to bumpmapping and shadowing features.

Well, in that thread were they played D3 on a voodoo card, thus without pixel shaders, you could see the actual poly count of D3 is real low.

edit : I found some pics. i think you can actually count the poly's

Looking at those models though, some tesselation has to be going on (or pre-tesselated models). I'm sorry but there is WAY more geometric detail on the spider-woman-thingy than that. I tried turning bumps off and there is more geometric detail in the characters than in the shots from the voodoo mod.

The poly count of the game is low, but the engine really has no limits in terms of dynamic polygon count

What's weird is, look at how great the environments in UT2K4 look, and then look at how low-poly-obvious all the enviornments in d3 are. If they used around the same amount, I have to give epic some credit for making such an awesome looking game with what they had Why are these Id guys getting so much credit all the time

What level is that spider-woman on? Been meaning to play through that level, since I never came close to beating the game. I don't even think I've seen a hellknight

i saw the pics on the voodoo, thats pretty cool, but what are the scene being made by sprites & low textures?

yeah, in other words, with the normalmapping it represents about 2 million polys worth of geometric data, as the normalmaps "emulates" geometry that isnt there.

There are illustrations of that here (cant seem to get in there atm):
http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html...ogy/ue30.shtml
Pics showing the raw lowpoly ingame model, and the highres sourceart model from where the normalmaps and lowpoly model is generated, and finally the result of the lowpoly model with the normal maps present.
Same approach as Doom III.
