Default Do I have a 5900xt or a 5900nu? (BIOS flashing)

Hi all,

I have a 5900xt club3d videocard and even though right now it doesn't really overclock well (405/820) I thought I'd try flashing the BIOS to see if I could get some better results.
Currently the BIOS version is 4.35.20.32.00. I guess revision 0 of the 5900xt club3d series?
Anyway, first I wanted to see how the flashing works and so on, so I tried to flash it with revision 2 (4.35.20.32.02) to be safe ... but a nogo because the PCB (?) version was different: P177 was needed, but my card has/is P172. Same goes for club3d 5900xt rev 1 BIOS.
After a quick search here I saw a post where someone said a P172 isn't a 5900xt, but a 5900nu?
Also, Rivatuner says the device id is 0337 (5900nu?), but "ROM strapped to 0331" (5900xt?).

So what do I have now and what type of BIOS' should I use? My card also doesn't even look like the pictures of club3d 5900xts I see on various website / forums. (see edit2 below).
On the other hand, the GPU IS a 5900xt (its printed on it); NV35 rev A1 according to RT...

So if my card PCB layout (how is it called?) is that of a 5900nu, I'm unable to use a 5900xt BIOS?

Thanks,

- Kama

edit: just remember this: Forceware drivers always recognize my card as a 5900; not 5900xt.

edit2:
after looking around, I found a picture of a card that has the same cooler as mine, only the label is different (club3d label ofcourse):
http://www.nvnews.net/previews/geforce_fx/index.shtml
It is the same as what the 5200Ultra and 5600Ultra have in that article.
Is that normal for a 5900?

Some developments on my side:

The BIOS my card has, is, apart from the clock frequencies, exactly the same as the club3d 5900NU bios. I compared the two, and I only seem to have a different 5900nu version.
[edit]
Looking at the thread "basic 59xxx bios changes" seems to comfirm it as well if I look at the 5900 bios part. The bios has a memorytiming of a 5900nu, but a memorylatency of a 5900u / 5950u. :P
[/edit]

Memory doesn't do 850, so I bet it has been relabeled to a 5900xt and sold as such ... still does 820 though, but that doesn't change the fact the core hardly goes beyond 400 ...

Looking at the BIOS I see I can increase the gpu voltage when in 3d ...
not without a risk ofcourse, but as long as I keep an eye on the temperature I should be fine, right? Alright, I'm off to try that out now.

[edit]
Setting the core voltage at 1.5 gave me a nice bump in speed ... and temperature, in the mid 70s now in 3D, so kind of worried about that. Nevertheless a speedincrease: 450/820 atm. Memory doesn't go higher, and even though the core might, I do not feel like trying that untill I got me some better cooling.
[/edit]

Many of the initial production Club3d FX5900XT cards were basically a doctored FX5900NU card with, appropriate to XT spec, modded 5900nu bios.

Unfortunately however, because they were not made to same quality as a 5900nu, it is unlikely that you would achieve same results as a real 5900nu.

However, as you have already found from my 59xx bios modding guide, there are a number of improvements that can be achieved from modding any 59xx bios; including yours.

Watch those temps though, since, once you start overclocking into 5900u and 5950u territory, your card is going to get very hot !

So if you seriously want to push your card, maybe you should first be looking for better heatsinking. Or at the very least, set a high airflow fan to blow directly accross the card.

Tnx for the reply.

Overclocking was just an experiment for me. Even at 450/820 (stable, 72 C max) I hardly gained more points in most benchmarks, with the exception of 3dm2k3 (4400->4800). I'm pretty much CPU limited ... no suprise there.

But I will upgrade my system (to a lowend AMD A64) as soon as I get my tax refund, and a better heatsink for my card will be on the list now as well. Untill then I'll play on the safe side and leave my card at 390/700.

One question though ... so I assume I have a 5900NU board now, but does that require a different type of heatsink/fan combination than the 5900XT boards?

The only answer I can give is, if the memory chip layout is the same as a 5900XT then you get a XT heatsink, otherwise your card's memory chip layout should be same as for 5900nu, 5900u, 5950u and thus you get a heatsink for this type. You should be able to check the different memory chip layouts of XT and NU cards on any FX manufacturers website.

And for improved cooling; If we take the Arctic FX Coolers for example, the correct heatsink assembly for a FX5900XT would be,

http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/...roductid=17807

And for a 5900nu type would be,

http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/...roductid=17809

EDIT:

But of course for extreme gpu cooling, WATER is a much better way to go !!

My card already has memory heatsinks attached to it,
and I do not feel like trying to get them off so any heatsink which also covers the memory will be out of the question for me.

So the artic nv3 would be fine then ... although I am not sure if the current memory heatsinks will be in the way. No harm in trying ofcourse.
Also, are the mounting points for a heatsink the same on a 5900xt and a 5900nu board ... would you happen to know that by any chance? That is my main concern atm.

I finally found a picture of what my card looks like (apart from the color of the PCB): http://www.theinquirer.net/images/articles/CLUB591.jpg ( http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13727 ).

and tnx for the help

Unfortunately as indicated in the Arctic Cooler link, their NV3 cooler appears to be large enough to cover both GPU and Memory chips. So no good to your requirement of wanting only a GPU cooler ?

http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.p...&data=4&disc=#

And the 4 mounting points for the NV3 Cooler match the 4 holes (around the GPU chip) in your card, just as the 3 mounting points of the NV4 Cooler match exactly with 3 of the 4 holes in my FX5900nu card.

Nice link of that cooler, but it looks like it won't fit on my card ... the nv3 as well as the nv4 is designed to cover the memory chips.
And now I see my card has memory layout of a 5900xt even though the PCB number is that of a 5900nu board (the 5900nu club3d bios works fine on my card as well).

The stock cooler is worthless to be honest; even at stock voltage the temperature increases up to 20 C more within the very first minute of any 3d application (40 -> 60). So the 10 C more for 0.1 more GPU voltage doesn't seem that bad, but one intake fan is already near the card, albeit blowing air mainly on the bottom side of the card.

Ok, I'll buy myself an nv3 silencer when I order the rest of my new system ... and hopefully there is a way to take of the memory heatsinks without too much risk involved.
