Default Nvidia installer: a Black Art?

As much as nvidia worked to make the graphic drivers' installation as convenient and user friendly as possible, the recent changes to the kernel have made this a truly Black Art with sometimes confusing and sketchy instructions for numerous patches and installation procedures.
How hard could it be for nvidia to acknowledge the community's work and incorporate and repackage the patches with the installer every now and then?

Have you been able to get it working? I am stuck with a nonworking 6600 on debian with a gigabyte dual amd mp motherboard. I get a crash every hour, and can provoke it in 5 minutes.
If you have a working recipe for getting it working, I would be glad to try it.

I'm sticking with 2.6.10-ck5 kernel.
I really "had it" when a friend finally managed to compile the module under 2.6.11 by loading the agpgart kernel module (in Init 3 that's not straightforward). Only then, the driver finally "worked".

And that is what I mean with "Black Art"!!!!

The AGPGART frontend currently needs to be pre-loaded manually due to a new dependency (the NVIDIA kernel module needs to interact with the AGPGART frontend in order to be able to decide if a backend driver is present on Linux 2.6.11+) on this module; in future driver releases, `nvidia-installer` will load agpgart.ko automatically.
