Default Sizing problems when switching monitors using twinview

I have a dell D800 running linux 2.6 and the latest nvidia driver.
The laptop display is 1920x1200 and I have an external monitor
at 1280x1024. I would like to be able to drive in 3 modes:

1) laptop only at 1920x1200
2) external monitor only at 1280x1024
3) both at 1280x1024

I have an xorg.conf file that does this, however, when in
mode 3, the screen on both monitors is too wide, ie, i need
to scroll left and to the bottom to see it all. I believe this is
because my virtual screen size is still 1920x1200.

Is there a way to fix this? I've been told to try xrandr, but it
doesn't look like the nvidia driver supports this (although
the xserver log files says it's enabled).
