Default Re: 1.0-7167 for Linux x86 released - 2.6.11.2 problem

Module compiles and links, but I get an error:

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.11.2/kernel/drivers/video/nividia.ko): No such device

BTW - lsmod says agpgart is loaded. What device is the nvidia module looking for?

Wow! 7167 + 2.6.11-ck2 is beautiful! No problems with the build and the 2D performance on my laptop (w/GeForce4 420 Go NV17) is stunning.

If you haven't tried it give Con Kolivas' kernel patches a go... great improvement for the desktop.

im a bit of a linux newbie and have been trying to get my nvidia drivers installed on my Mepis system for a few days now but am having no luck. when i run the install file it checks to see whether the code has already been compiled for my kernel using the internet. this comes back false and so tries to compile the source itself. when it does this it flashes on the progress bar for a second and then says "error" and it could not build the file. any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be much appreciated. here is my log file

Linux-GNU 2.6.10 on Intel P4 3.06GHz
TNT2 M64 32M, XFree86 4.4

7167 compiles without any problems BUT
when I try to bring up XFree86:

FATAL: Module nvidia already in kernel.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

Note: I tried w/wo 'modprobe -q agpgart'
(AAMOF nvidia always needs agpgart up and running)

Please also note that 6629 does not work either but
6111 (with patches) works AOK.
(i.e. To get on line for this post I reinstalled 6111).

Please help. In the meantime,
is there a way I can use the XFree86 nvidia driver?
(/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.o)
If so, how can I get from the '*.o' to the '*.ko'
module needed by 2.6.x kernels?

Thanks

@Alphohsu Pugh: please upgrade your module-init-tools or unload the NVIDIA kernel module prior to starting X after the installation - `rmmod nvidia`.

another Powermanagement issue: My GPU cooler starts spinning at full speed when using the new driver, even without using any OpenGL (and this damn cooler is a noisy beast at full RPM)

Is the NVRM: Xid crap fixed in this version?

Should I upgrade? I run SuSE 9.1 pro (kernel 2.6.5-7.147) with GeForce4 MX 4000 (maddog) (6111).

I have version 0.9.14
Has worked just fine on any 2.6.x I've played with and up to 6111.

Same problem.

The most conclusive indicator that there is a real problem somewhere is that 6111 compiles and works
perfectly (as far as it goes - I still have the old problem with Hyperthreading, but that's another story)
while as soon as I touch 7167 (in any order and combination) I get this consistent and constant problem.

Thank you. Please keep helping.

Exact same problem here. Installer says it cannot find kernel source. putting --kernel-source-path to the installer does not help either.
Any solution?
