Please upgrade your module-init-tools or unload the NVIDIA kernel prior to starting X after the installation - `rmmod nvidia`.

This worked the last time I had troubles with driver upgrades.

Pre-installation: modprobe -r nvidia
Post-installation: modprobe nvidia

@djmuk: the problem in this case appears to be that the module is loaded when the X server is started (as of 1.0-7167, the NVIDIA X driver module explicitely loads the NVIDIA kernel module).

This is exactly the problem I'm having with 1.0-7167. Tried it in both XF86 and XOrg. Is there a remedy for this?

@JustinTArthur: yes, please see post #2 in this thread. Does neither suggestion help on your system?

Upgrading to the latest module-init-tools did the trick. Thanks a bunch. That's what I get for not following directions. x_x
