Unhappy Nvidia Driver kills ppp

Hi,
I have a strange dialup connection problem which appears to be related to the nvidia driver.
The setup:
1. Toshiba Satellite M30
2. Fedora Core 2 Upgraded with (latest 2.6.11 kernel, 1.0.8 alsa, latest 2.9.10 smartlink modem drivers)

The Problem:
The ppp dialup connection dies a silent death as soon as I switch out of X and back again. Irrespective of dialer, irrespective of smartlink driver. I have tried using the smartlink driver with and without ALSA. The problem persists. I am pretty sure this has something to do with the nvidia drivers, as the problem doesn't come up if I use the "nv" driver. It occurs only when I use the "nvidia" driver. Everything else seems perfect. I have sound. glxgears reports max FPS of 2400+.

If I keep pinging a site before switching out of X, when I come back to X, the ping stops getting packets back. Then all communication on ppp stops. no ping of IPs or names. No name resolution. nothing.

The problem was there with the stock FC2 kernel. It is there with the new kernel as well. I have tried nvidia versions 6629 and 6111 as well but to no avail. The latest version released on 11th march is also giving the same probelm.

Please suggest how to tackle this problem. There is nothing suspicious in /var/log/messages also. I am ready to post any file you may require analysing this problem.

Thanks!!

Hi,
There are a few more things I would like to point out. When I switch from a virtual console to X while using "nvidia" driver, the screen blanks out for a second and then gets painted properly. This doesn't happen when I use the "nv" driver. Can this behaviour of nvidia be somehow changed? This somehow causes problem with network connectivity. I loose my dialup connection. The behaviour is same as when I close the lid. Then also my network connections drop. I am curious as to why switching to X simulates "lid close".
Can anybody please throw some light on this ?

Thanks!

Sounds like a kernel bug...
run "ksymoops", and give the output to "perex@suse.cz" (the maintainer of intel8x0)... he'll probably help you...

Hi,
Am now using slamr module without ALSA support. This eliminated the semaphore related errors. However, the problem is still there. I don't get anything in /var/log/messages. I get the following in /var/log/X.0.log though:

Synaptics DeviceOff called
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x800"
Synaptics DeviceOn called
(--) Synaptics Mouse touchpad found

when I switch from X to a virtual console and then back to X. I don't know why /dev/apm_bios is being queried even though I have compiled in only ACPI in my kernel. Switching from X to a console and then back causes my dialup connection to hang. The thing is that the monitor screen of my laptop blanks for some time when I switch to X. I think this is somehow related to my connection drops because same thing happens when I close the lid (the screen blanks and opening it causes "ping www.yahoo.com" to stop returning packets).

Can anybody please tell me how to remove that /dev/apm_bios related warning and how to debug this connection problem ?

Thanks in advance....
