yeah... I can't find that option too in my msi with the nforce2ultra... anyway I enabled "video cache bios" or something... for now it seems ok... but only time will tell.. right?

How's that going for you? I switched to the NVIDIA AGP driver from my in-kernel AMD K8 GART driver, which didn't really accomplish anything, then tried this suggestion (which seems to make sense, as I'm usually doing 2D GUI stuff when it happens) and for the time being I'm crash-free (knock on wood). It's only been a day or something, so I'll see how it goes.

Default Re: 7167, Xorg freezes (Xid: 13)

I also had this bug a lot in the past, just in X or in games like Warcraft III (after about a minute) with Cedega as well.

X Window System Version 6.8.1
KDE: 3.4.0 Level "a"
NVIDIA 7167 32bits

xorg.conf:
Option "RenderAccel" "On"

xorg.conf (new)
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "1"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "RENDER" "Enable"

I had to have RenderAccel on cause otherwise whole X were so slow it is unbelievable. After my crashes seized I turned on the "(new)" settings.

How I 'fixed' it:
-force AGP to 2x in BIOS (instead of 4x)
-disable AGP Fastwires

I have an Asus A7V133 motherboard with a VIA KT133 chipset. I half suspect the chipset to be utter crap, gave me troubles as well in windows; but doing this thank god fixed me the X crashes. Altough putting it back on 4x is going bad really reall fast. I tried changing AGP Drive Strength as suggested; the default was pretty high. Setting it any higher didn't even boot the pc or X; so I left it alone.

Hope it helps.

fedora core 3, nvida driver 7167, amd64, asus k8v-x
problem: a few minutes after boot, system freeze (only mouse move)
Solution (workaround): Disable cpuspeed
Conclusion: nvidia drver 7167 have a bug (not work with cpuspeed daemon)

I install a 32 bit version of linux (fedora core 3) on a amd64 CPU (asus k8v-x) and all work fine with nvidia driver version 7167 (32 bits). Cpuspeed also work fine!!!
The problem is with 64 bit version of nvidia driver.

Thumbs down Re: 7167, Xorg freezes (Xid: 13)

Using RenderAccel & OpenGL is the best way to make the nvidia driver Xid 'n crash :-/.

Default Re: 7167, Xorg freezes (Xid: 13) SOLVED

Concernig my problems (see page of this thread, I had crashes with a FX5200 on Mandrake 10.1 at 1600x1200),
the source of the problems were not the video card,
but the RAM modules.

Shame on me, in the end I realised the problems came from new RAM modules I had bought at the same time I bought my FX5200.
The only reason I saw a link with the resolution was that it consumes more memory, which probably lead into unstable RAM areas.

I have solved the problem by changing the RAM configuration.

To be more precise :
I had initially a 256 MB RAM module from Hynix.
then I upgraded with 2 Dane Elec modules of 512 ,
so with this configuration : 512 + 512 + 256.
If I use only 512 + 512 then the system is stable.

I see 2 possible reasons why the 512 + 512 + 256 configuration caused all these crashes:
- either some hardware problems (different kind of RAM trademarks? it should have been OK according to the manual of my motherboard)
- or the default limitation of the Linux kernel to work with more than 1 GB of RAM ??

Whatever, it works fine now.

Tried to disable the composite extension and you know what?
No xid error and no problems anymore... The shadows are gone though :/
