Thumbs up canīt install nVidia drivers under Mandrake 10.1

Hi! I am new in Linux and in English to.. so PLEASE be gentle and patient

I have a problem!
I installed Mandrake 10.1 lately whith Kernel 2.6.8.1. Now I want to install nVidia drivers, but i can’t! I tried everything...

Then I realized, that I have no kernel-surce in my /usr/src/ dircetory..
I used the ’uname -r’ to recognize my kernel version.. it was ’2.6.8.1-12mdk’
so I downloaded source of kernel 2.6.8.1 from kernel.org and put into /usr/src/linux/ .

But now nvidia installer gives a new error:

Quote:
ERROR: If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
you either have configured kernel sources matching your
kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
on your system.

If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the appropriate nvidia-installer command line option.
I understand nothing now..
What I do wrong?

I don’t know if it’s useful, but ’rpm -qa | grep kernel’ outputs ’kernel-2.6.8.1.12mdk-1-1mdk’

Here is nvidia-installer.log

I've not used Mandrake so I can't be 100% on this - but they should provide the kernel source as a package you can install also. Install this first! Downloading the 2.6.8.1 kernel won't help, as I suspect Mandrake run a patched custom kernel.

urpmi kernel-source-2.6

in rpmdrake, if you type kernel-source, you should be able to find the exact kernel-source for your kernel.

As written above, a downloaded kernel source tree won't work, since its version (2.6.8.1) doesn't match exactly your kernel version (2.6.8.1-12mdk)

Hi!

I've had a problem with the linux installer of 7167 drivers and mandrake 10.0. The first try unfortunately failed, so I extracted the archive with option -x and did a
make install, wich finally succeeded. I cannot reproduce the problem since
the same installer runs without problems on the same system now.

Now I have a new "problem": When I close the glxgears window the
application continues to run -- wich seems a bit strange. If I do ctrl-C
the glxgears stops and everything works as expected...

The message log then tells me ...

Default Re: canīt install nVidia drivers under Mandrake 10.1

Hello,

I tried to install the 7167 linux driver with the Mandrake 10.1 standard
kernel (2.6.8.1-12mdk) and failed. (The same hardware was running with
Mandrake 10.0 with minor problems (Xid errors)).

See attached nvidia-bug-report-log for details.

The log tells something about "unable to load kernel module nvidia.ko" and
about "unknown symbol in module" called agp_enable etc.

(The agp thing seems to be the problem (?) since my machine uses pci-express)

TO: fiftywan

I have several kernel pakages
'kernel-i586-up-1GB-2.6.8.1.12mdk-1-1mdk'
'kernel-smp-2.6.8.1.12mdk-1-1mdk'
'kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-12mdk' and 'kernel-enterprise-2.6.8.1.12mdk-1-1mdk'!

As I sad
'uname -r' reports '2.6.8.1-12mdk' but 'rpm -qa | grep kernel' - 'kernel-2.6.8.1.12mdk-1-1mdk'

Which should I take?

I think the PCI thing is normal... I have the same information for the PCI bus (GF4 Ti4200)

yet, I have Status:enabled in the /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

are you sure agpgart is not loaded when you start X?

in a root tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to console-mode):
service dm stop
rmmod agpgart
modprobe nvidia
lsmod | grep nvidia (<-- this one should tell you the driver module is loaded)
startx

and then, try your cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status again

I tried as you sad fiftwan:

rmmod agpgart reported: ERROR: Module is in use by nvidia,via-agp

and

lsmod | grep nvidia:

nvidia 3913948 0
agpgart 27752 2 nvidia. via-agp

and now

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card reports:

Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 8x 4x
Registers: 0x1f000e1b:0x00000000

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge:
