Default Sound: Center and Subwoofer don't work

Hi,

I have an NForce2 mainboard and this soundstorm-Sound. I think its called AC97.

With the module that is in the kernel (snd_intel_8x0) i have only front 2 speakers working. If i do "duplicate front" in alsamixer i hear the rear ones too. No subwoofer and no center speaker working.

If i boot windows everything works fine, so the hardware is not damaged or broken.

Then, i downloaded the newest Nvidia driver. I installed and loaded the nvsound module. Well, now 4 speakers are working. No subwoofer, no center again.

I played around with alsamixer and nvmixer for days. No result.
What am i doing wrong?

I have Debian (Sid) Linux. I tried different kernels: 2.6.8, 2.6.9 and today 2.6.11.4. I compiled all the alsa stuff as modules, and the OSS emulation stuff. But i did not compile OSS at all. Did i do anything wrong?

Hi there,
first don't be excited because I won't help you ...
Just to mention that I have EXACTLY the same issue as you described (actually I first thought it was my post),. I posted a very similar request for help on the nvidia forum but never got any answer... tried it all > alsa / nvaudio, mixers, kernel... gave up, I was wasting too much time.
May be if enough people post exactly the same requests the NV guys will react ??? who knows. In the mean time I will try alsa on the new machines I bought, they have 7.1 sound (asus boards).

Good luck!

Same problem here.

Tried everything. Some combinations of options with surround51 or surround40 drivers caused the center channel to be the rear channel but I never got everything working as it should.

I'm using an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe board with on-board 7.1 sound.

Just to say,
Got everything working on nForce4 (6 audio out) with standard alsa drivers (with oss emu) from kernel. I had to connect center+subwoofer to microphone plug and switch to it accordly from gnome volume settings.

Hi chareos,

how do you get it to work with alsa? I think it's an oss driver.

(or you didn't install nforce? )

I don't use nforce. Just plain kernel drivers. Everything works well
(except that with the workaround I mentioned above, I'll be in trouble when trying to use teamspeak or similar... cause I've the mic jack used for center-subwoofer)
