Angry NVRM: Xid: 6, Kernel 2.6.11-r4 gentoo - X freezes

I can't get this thing to stay up more than 5 minutes in X running mythtv (playing back a video). All I have running is a single window in fluxbox..that's it!

When X freezes it goes to 99% CPU usage and dmesg shows:
NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0000 0400 82818281 0000fbb4 fd2f6400 817e817e

Gentoo (everything is pretty much latest non masked packages)
I've tried Nvidia 1.0.6629-r4, 1.0.7167-r1, and 6111 won't compile against my kernel

Hi,

try a bios/firmware update for your graphic card. A lot of people are solving their probs that way...

Here are the details on how I eliminated the "Xid: [6|13]" active-pointer freezes on my system. HTH.

BTW, I also suspect that the problem stems from a recent change in Xorg and/or another software package. I had AGP write masking disabled without issue a few weeks ago (same system and video card BIOS versions).

I think that's only for AMI bioses, this Via board has an Phoneix Award Bios without that write mask option.

Here are really the only video options I could find:
AGP Aperature Size 64M, Mode 8x, Driving Control Auto or manual to enter a hex entry, CPU to PCI Post Write Enabled, Assign IRQ for VGA Enabled

If I go back to using an older xorg will it fix the problem?

Hrm. If you're not using the latest version of your system's BIOS, you could try upgrading that first. Flashing your video card's BIOS might be a good idea too, if you can find the right image for it. Personally, though, I'd save VC BIOS flashing for last (after you've tried everything else).

I'd be tempted to toggle "CPU to PCI Post Write," but TBH I have no idea what that does (or even whether it's related to AGP/video). You might want to consult your mobo's manual first.

That's worth a try, and is considerably less risky than flashing BIOSes or playing with BIOS settings.

Ya i'm emerging xorg 6.8.0 as that's the last one i know worked well. I went back to 2.6.9 but again that didn't solve anything. Actually I should try nvidia 6111 now that I have a kernel they'll compile against.

Maybe i'll try flashing the mobo bios, but i doubt that will do anything. The video card is a g4mx440 with v4.18.20.32.00 and aopen doesn't supply a bios for it. I don't feel like flashing it with another manufacturers bios to find it doesn't work.

This is such a pain, I just use this box as a Myth PVR. I've never had this much trouble with nvidia before.

#$#$%#$%#$% I went to nvidia 6111, and xorg 6.8.0 and it's still doing it. Except now I don't get that error, dmesg shows nothing. My video just freezes and X goes to 99%!!!

I don't know what do to with this box :-/

I think i figured it out (yes let these few words spark enlightenment for those searching the forums for things to try)... at least it's been stable for about 30 min now (would go down before in about a minute).

All i did was use this: Option "NvAgp" "1" so i'm thinking agpgart is somehow full of bugs when it comes to this via chipset.

I'm currently running 2.6.9 gentoo dev sources and 6111 nvidia drivers with xorg 6.8.0. I might try upgrading again to see if it still works.

NVRM: not using NVAGP, an AGPGART backend is loaded!

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Disabled

AGP initialization failed, please check the ouput
of the 'dmesg' command and/or your system log file
for additional information on this problem.

hrm.. well it works it's been up for about an hr :-P I don't care about AGP on this box. I'll try upgrading to the latest kernel, nvidia drivers etc and see what's up.
