Nvidia drivers on SUSE 9.2?

Hi!

I'm quite newbie in Linux, although I used Mandrake 10 for some months. No problems with Nvidia drivers there once you got the idea of what to do to install them. Now I got SUSE Linux 9.2 which is nicer looking, but I have some issues with the graphical drivers for my GeForce4 Ti4200. The drivers had to be downloaded specifically after installing the main OS (due to legal restrictions), and I got the 66.xx drivers. And I had many problems getting to work the 3d acceleration function, which I assume is OpenGL support. After many tries I did it, but now I have this stupid limitation for resolution and screen refresh rate. I can only go up to 1024x768 at 60 hz in my Philips 107S monitor (which in WinXP runs happily at 85hz in 1024x768, or 60hz in 1280x1024). I cannot find any way to change the refresh rate (I have used the resize&rotate tool but the only rate offered is 60hz, and the top resolution is 1024x768). Any ideas?

Apparently, also, installing the NVIDIA driver manually in SUSE is quite difficult.

Actually, manually installing the NVidia drivers under Linux is easy as hell, it takes just a few simple steps once you download the drivers...

Download the latest drivers, and then open up a console, and type "init 3" to kill the GUI.

Log in as root(su) and then go to the directory where you saved the NVidia drivers... Type the following 3 steps once you get to the right directory, in my case it was done by typing "cd /home/dave"

1) sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run -q -n
2) modprobe nvidia
3) sax2 -m 0=nvidia

When you get into the sax2 utility, make sure that you set up not only the max rez of your monitor, but also whatever other ones you want to use. As for refresh, I think those settings are there too, but I have an LCD so refresh rates are a thing of the past for me. :-)

Now reboot or simply type "startx" to restart the GUI.
