Jens,

Looks like you have the *exact* same problem as I do. Steven's symptoms are slightly different, although the root cause may be the same.

One thing is for sure, then -- PCI Express is not to blame. Jens, are you using a DVI output too? What kind of RAM?

Yes, it really looks the same. I am using DVI, yes. What RAM are you refering to? The nvidia 6600GT has 128MB of DDR3 RAM installed (are there any differences?).

Cu,

Jens
I was refering to the system RAM you're using... it's probably not important.

Have you ever tried running your system using the VGA output instead of DVI? I haven't done that yet, I seem to have misplaced my VGA cable somewhere...

No, system RAM is ok here. But maybe the problem has to do with udev, I am currently investigating a small issue, but I do not think, this is our problem :-|

BTW: Switching resoluting sometimes triggers a freeze, too :-(

Still hoping, somebody will have an answer here...

I see a simial problem (reboot or hang with startx) with 2.6.11.2 and 2.6.11.5 kernels with the 6600 and a supermicro X6DAL-G main board. However, it is fine with a clean install of SuSE 9.2 running a 2.6.8 kernel, again with driver 7174 (maybe a glue). I'm using DVI output. I have already posted my problem, but got no solution.

Cheers

Steve.

PS. Running 64-bit SuSE 9.2.

I have a similar problem. I have the PCI-E 6200TC and I get VERY high cpu usage (like 70% just for the X process) when using xv. I'm using Gentoo with agpgart and vga output. I made sure direct rendering was on and that I'm using the correct client and server opengl libraries.

um... My kernel version is 2-6-9.71 and gcc version is 3.4.1
glibc version is 2.3.3-35

I don't know what is cause of problem....

... sometimes, I think reboot is better than hang.
because when I wake up in the morning. turn on my computer and go to bath.
but when I came back, computer is still stop!

Isn't it fun? ... Oh.. sorry...

As you see, no gcc update. The only place I can find that *.22.fc3 thing ist in testing?

Cheers,

yes I have gcc from testing because of this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=151772
(not related to the nvidia drivers)

It most certainly does. Also, if I try to run X with a 16-bit depth, then it *deterministically* crashes (in the exact same manner as the probabilistic crash with 24-bit depth).

Tried going back to 2.6.10 and 2.6.9 (stock FC3)
While the 2.6.9 managed to stay up for ~20 minutes (a new world record), it finally crashed with the same Xid messages.

I think we can rule out the kernel out of this problem.
Same goes for AGP (tried both NvAGP and agpgart).

Smells like a GPU BIOS - GPU - driver problem to me.
