Poor OpenGL performance with geforce fx 5200

I've been trying to solve this problem for a day now and nothing seems to work. I get about 500 fps in glxgears with 7174 drivers in mandrake 10.1 with xorg 6.8.2. This is really weird because with my old radeon 7500 my score was almost 1900 fps. I've tried disabling acpi, enabling sba and fast writes, all the libraries are correct and Xorg.0.log tells me that everything should be working. I have read threads from other people with exactly the same problem and no luck... Any ideas?

try using NvAgp 1, make sure you have "direct rendering: Yes" and that your "OpenGL version string: 1.5.3 NVIDIA 71.74" via glxinfo... (this will determine if you're using the NVIDIA libraries)

otherwise... your performance may be accurate... the FX 5200 has more features than a Radeon 7500 but possibly has a half the memory interface... perhaps less than 64-bit and maybe less on the frequency side as well.. having a chocked bandwidth compared to the 7500...

Yeah, maybe I should have done more research before buying this card :/ ... Well I'll try to do a clean install of mandrake

There's nothing very wrong with a fx5200 (~geforce3). Althought is in't the fastest card it should be a lot faster than a radeon 7500 (~geforce1 ddr). It matters a bit if the card has a 64bit or 128bit memory interface but even with 64bit it outperforms the radeon.

Note that glxgears isn't a very good test, test the performance in real games also check if glxgears shows the correct output (direct rendering, glx vendor nvidia and there needs to be a long list of extensions).

also i think you meant to say glxinfo for the check... i know you're a mod.. but can we try to avoid redundancy as much as possible? i mean we deal with it on creation of threads from people not reading other posts to possibly see their problem is already solved...
