You can't really change IRQ through setpci.
I ever tried to change IRQ Line/Pin in the PCI configuration space
within a driver. And it is impossible.

While the noapic solution did seem to work, the performance hit was extensive; My glxgears performance dropped from 6500 fps to less then 5000; Code compilation (I do for a living) took ages; I/O performance went down… in short; I should stick to apic

Pure-joy.

With apic:

I've managed to stop the IRQ sharing on both apic and noapic; but the sadly enough, I managed to Xid both of them.
Noapic is more stable, but Xid's never-the-less.

Cheers,

Me also disabled ethernet and usb and used a ps2 mouse and it still give Xid 23/8.

It is probably it's just harder to crash with noapic - slower, thus less likely to crash (as it seems with any option).

The performance degrading intrigued me, so I turned acpi back on. nvidia still has its own IRQ, but doom 3 produces 5% higher FPS. And runs stable, for that matter.

So, for me noacpi/noapic aren't needed to get the game working, its just a help coercing the computer in changing the interrupts.

I've only had one more XID since I've changed the IRQ layout, and that was winter overclock / summer temperature related.

I have tired playing with IRQ in my bios to no avil. Setting noapic in my kernel parms does nothing(I dont have acpi compiled in or as a module). My ethernet and sound card are on the same IRQ but disabling them both does nothing. My USB drivers are also all on the same IRQ but I cannt disable that because I have alot of USB devices(including my mouse). My nvidia card is set to IRQ 16 but I can not reserve that in my BIOS. Does anyone have a clue how to fix this? If it is an IRQ problem would it be a nvidia, kernel, or mobo problem?

System Specs:
Mobo: ASUS A8V Deluxe(via chipset)
CPU: AMD 64 3500+
OS: Gentoo Linux 2005.0 x86_64
Kernel: 2.6.11-ck7

Nobody knows. There are plenty of reported workarounds for the problem(s), but not a single one that works in every case. Someone with a lot of resources and expertise available might be able to demystify the situation, but such people (or corporations) seem to be conspicuously absent.

FWIW, I'm of the opinion that it's purely a software problem not caused by nVidia's driver. So I recommend against replacing hardware or tweaking your system until it won't boot.

AFAIK, a regular motherboard only has 0-15 interrupts. So if your card is on interrupt 16, something's afoot.

BTW Update: I've run in acpi mode now, and even though the card has its own unshared interrupt, I've experienced 2 XIDs. Back in noapic/noacpi.

Actually those of us with dual cpu's have 128 IRQ's. I have a pair of athlon mp's myself, and I get the xid crashes. My screen gets relatively colorful, though you can still somewhat see what was on screen at the time. I've tried no apic, no acpi, xorg, xfree, diff window managers etc etc etc. I've never found a workaround. It has done it on gf3's, and my current fx5200. I'm going to just buy an ati card and try that. I cannot play games at all, and even the desktop crashed weekly or so. These drivers haven't worked at all since the 5xxx series for me, but since those drivers dont support this card I am out of luck. I've heard horror stories about getting ATI drivers to work, but I couldnt care less if they are hard to get running if they at least work once you get them going. I haven't used anything but nvidia since the TNT came out, but I'm all done. This card is 100% worthless. I might as well have not have a gui at all.
