I've got the same message (xid blah bla blah) ...
I've tried many things (remove agpgart, several version of nvidia driver)

With windows XP .. everything works fine!

I know this might be an individual case, but I have been hitting this bug for 11 months now and here are my observations:

xmms + glxgears = crash in 3 seconds
beep-media-player + glxgears = crash in 2 seconds
beep-media-player + neverball (OpenGL game) = crash in 15 seconds
xmms + blender = crash in less than 15 minutes
beep-media-player + blender = crash in less than 15 minutes
neverball alone = doesn't crash
blender alone =doesn't crash
glxgears alone = doesn't crash
VLC + glxgears = doesn't crash
UT2004 = doesn't crash
Quake3 = doesn't crash

btw, I used to use Gentoo when I first hit this bug then Debian and now Ubuntu, same bug on all three, I tried every software combo there is.

I'm installing Amarok now and will report if nothing crashes.

Well I thought I was doing the right thing and buy NEW gear for my mythtv box but look's like I could have saved some money and got older gear that seems to work...

I have a Asus P5S800 motherboard with a Sparkle 6200 video card, will run all day without hickup but when I frist tried watching video or TV crash, just tried glxgears and ran for ages but when I exited out of it crash, always the same xid error, x at 100% cpu.... the nv driver does not recognise the video card (will in next xorg release) vesa driver works but looks horrid...

I do hope nVidia people are working on this it would be nice for them to confirm that at least know about it and that it's high priority...

Here's the nvidia log to help...

Supposed Regards
Tim

I've read through most of this thread, trying to see what I can find for my particular setup that might help with the lockup problem. For me, the problem is X locking up (100% cpu), ssh is fine, and "strace -p `pidof X`" shows an infinite SIGALRM loop of some kind. I'm running FC4.

The graphics card I have in my machine is a Quadro4 (some HP workstation I use at work). I had previously ran FC2 on it, and had similar lockup problems. When I originally installed FC4, it worked beautifully, and ran for months (I hadn't rebooted for 65 days until there was a power outage).

I update the system regularly. About a month ago, it started to lock up (I'd lock the terminal, leave for the weekend, come in Monday and see it frozen). It locks up a lot quicker now, however, sometimes only minutes after letting the screensaver run (all GL by the way). When I update (yum update), if there's a kernel update, I also check for nvidia updates. I know X, mesa, and the nvidia drivers have all been updated within the last month on my machine.

A few coworkers of mine also run FC4. As far as I can tell, none have had lockup problems. One thing I'm fairly certain of is that they don't run updates. They install FC4, install the nvidia module, grab my xorg.conf, and off they go. All of the machines we use are nearly identical (P4 2.6 HT, 512MB RAM, unsure as to the motherboard model). I have an extra hard drive in mine for extra data storage.

I'm tempted to install FC4 again on another drive, and play around with update sequences to see what happens. Hopefully with some time and experimentation, I can figure out where my problem started. If I find anything, I'll post it here.

Some people claimed that they helped the xorg people to adress this issue and that it will be fixed in 6.9.0, well guess what Xid's are still here with X.Org version: 6.9.0 and latest nvidia driver.

Holy ****, this still hasn't been solved?

I've changed everything hardware except for my Asus V9999GT (GF6800GT/128mb) and the crashes still persist. I have now two theories:

a) It has something to do with the AGP software that all nvidia drivers share.
b) A huge percentage of nvidia boards are faulty.

There's still no real solution yet, right?
