Yes, the X-Server goes down too, but I always run games on a secound X-Server (using xgame) so when the game crashes it just goes back to my other X-Server with Xfce running on it. The X-Server has to end when the process is gone it was hosting. Back in Xfce I can just start the game again and keep on playing. The computer doesn't crash just the game and the second X-Server, and the X-process doesn't eat up the CPU-power as it did with 6.8.2. I don't know for sure if the crashing game produces Xid errors because I just upgraded my OS and I don't have my old log-files anymore... But I'm pretty sure it does. I will check on that when I have some more time to play...

I can produce Xid errors (6 and 23) when I have one X-Server on F7 (2D Xfce) and one X-Server on F8 (3D Doom3) and I keep switching between the 2 X-Servers. But this neither crashes the X-Server with 2D nor the one with 3D! Both stay happy and alive... When I used X.org 6.8.2 switching led to crashes almost always.

The game crashes only occure while I play and they are rather rare (once or twice when I play for hours).

Solved... how?
Apt-get what, to what version?

Pete H,
Thanks. I never thought about having two X-servers... I'll re-read your post tomorrow (after some good night sleep) and see what I can make of it.

Back to the thread's subject, I managed to crash X while starting abiword; That effectively kills the "it's an OpenGL library problem" idea.

Code:
 Apr 30 03:13:04 gilboa-home-dev kernel: NVRM: Xid: 13, 0000 02051900 00000019 00000104 00400001 00000802
The only thing different between the OpenGL crashes and this one is the number of Xid’s. Usually I get a long list of them; when X crashed alone, I only got one Xid. (Which doesn’t say anything… just worth mentioning)

Cheers,

Tried using nvclock to find a correlation between the GPU core speed, core temperature and Xid errors... no go.
While running Enemy-territory, the GPU crashed after less then 5 minutes when the temperature reached 67c, GPU speed was 500Mhz.
I tried running glxgears over night and it didn't crash; during the night the GPU temperature reached (and remained at around) 92c (!!!) but the machine remained stable; again, the core speed was 500Mhz.

While I should be getting a better GPU fan for my Leadtek, It seems that the core temperature has nothing to do with the dreaded Xid errors... (Same goes for the core speed)

Cheers,

gilboa: The change in mhz was just the way we noticed that the card went from 2D mode to 3D mode it may have nothing to do with the change in mhz. I think it has something to do with changing the modes. Try running glxgears and while glxgears is running start et. That seems to always work for me.

I've been having Xid problems for a long time. There has been all types of error codes and symptoms. None of the solutions posted here had any effect at all. BUT, there is good news... The problem ended up being that one of my ram modules was faulty. Removing the faulty module resulted in hours upon hours of openGL game playing with weeks of potential uptime Back to being good ol' stable as a rock linux

So check your hardware

Thanks... but I doubt it.
As I said in the first post, the machine was rock solid with my older FX5900/256MB and an even older GF4/4400.

Cheers,

Hey everyone. I seem to be having the same problem as you. =/

My hardware:

Asus CUV4X board
PIII - 800MHz
256MB RAM
RIVA TNT2
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Gentoo Linux 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 (2005.0 profile, up to date with latest stable ebuilds)

This problem started after I installed the Audigy, and is resolved if remove it. =/ I noticed that a couple of other people with the problem have Audigies as well.

Nyago: hmmm I have the same audigy card. This weekend I could try removing it and seeing what happens. Have you tried disabling your sound to see if its a driver issue? If it is the sound card the emu10k1(sound card driver for pretty much all sound blaster cards) could be conflicting with something in the nvidia driver. Anyone else here have a sound blaster?

I'll try that, though it's unlikely since I had upgraded from an SB Live! Value.

I shall keep you posted.

What SBLive/Audigy driver do you use? OSS? ALSA?
