Default Problems with SMP and lots of RAM

I'm having a couple of problems with my system. First one has been around for a while. Whenever I close an OpenGL application, there's a random chance of the whole system freezing. It happens perhaps one time out of 50, but that's annoying enough when I'm developing such software myself and have to test it out frequently. I have several other Nvidia cards on uniprocessor systems and they don't have this problem.

The second problem appeared just today after I upgraded my RAM to 3GB. Trying to put any OpenGL application into 1600x1200 fullscreen mode will freeze the system. Any smaller mode works fine, as does 1600x1200 windowed. Dropping the RAM amount to 2GB makes things work fine again.

Any suggestions for fixing these problems?

System specs:
Tyan TigerMPX (AMD760MPX chipset)
Dual AthlonMP 2133MHz
Up to 3GB of RAM
GeForce FX 5700, driver 71.67
Kernel 2.6.11.6
XFree86 4.3.0

Any Xid messages
What AGP driver do you use?
Did you try the 71.74 driver?
Distro? Kernel? Hi-mem configuration?

The computer freezes before it can write any such messages to disk. I could try to fiddle around with serial console or networked syslog... That will take some time though.

I'm using the kernel agpgart driver, built as a module. The nvidia kernel module seems to depend on that, so I can't try with Nvidia's AGP driver. Should I recompile the kernel and nvidia module with agpgart disabled or something?

Haven't tried the new driver yet, does it contain any relevant fixes?

Distribution is Debian (testing), kernel is 2.6.11.6 as I said before. High-mem support is set to 4GB.

I upgraded to 2.6.11.7 and 71.74 and disabled the Linux AGP driver. It still crashes.

Still working on the Xid messages.

Can you access the machine over serial/ssh?

Not when it's crashed. It doesn't even respond to ping.

I got these messages with networked syslog:

Apr 17 11:23:20 beaver kernel: NVRM: Xid: 23, L1 -> L0
Apr 17 11:23:20 beaver kernel: NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0004 0200 06400000 00234e84 00000000 02b80006
Apr 17 11:23:20 beaver kernel: NVRM: Xid: 23, L1 -> L0
Apr 17 11:23:20 beaver kernel: NVRM: Xid: 6, PE0004 0100 00000000 00229fd0 00000000 00000000

It seems like this problem depends on the amount of _physical_ RAM installed, since adding mem=2048M didn't fix it. I hope it's not a hardware incompatibility (ugh, what a word).

Can you post your mtrr? (cat /proc/mtrr)

Cheers,

Sure.

reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=2048MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x80000000 (2048MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1
reg02: base=0xc2000000 (3104MB), size= 4MB: write-combining, count=1

With only 2GB of RAM installed the middle line is missing.

Saying mem=2048M on boot doesn't affect the MTRR contents.

... mmm... You're not using the CONFIG_2G kernel option, right?

Probably not unless it's enabled by default. I tried grepping the whole source tree for that string but there were no matches at all.

Didn't think so...

I assume that beside nVidia that machine is stable with 3GB, right?

Yup, perfectly stable. To be sure of that, I created a couple of large images in GIMP (after allowing it to use a lot of memory) and filled them with noise to make sure it actually used all that memory. RAM usage was at 2786M without any stability problems.

Even nVidia doesn't cause any problems unless I try to use 1600x1200 fullscreen mode in an OpenGL application.
