Arrow SLI with no PCI Express molex power

It's a glorious world when one can benchmark Doom3 at 85 FPS without a PCI-Express molex on your graphics cards.

A deal on dual 6800 Ultras was too good to pass up, but it broke the bank. I'll have to wait for next pay period to buy a SLI PSU. Yet after a few days in a box, the Ultras forced me to test them using a regular PSU (without any 6-pin PCI-Express molex connectors).

A quick sanity check with one of my buds still working at NVIDIA assured me there would be reduced performance, but no damage to the hardware without the PCI-Exp molex power. So...

My A64 3000+ machine would not boot with dual 6800s using a CAI 300W PSU, but a Forton 430W PSU boots and is stable. On Doom3 timedemo @ 1024768-Medium, the SLI 6800 Us bench at 85 FPS, and one 6800 U benches at 51 FPS. My next best system, a Barton 3000+ / GeForce FX 5800, gets 29 FPS at the same settings.

This may be my last upgrade for a while, so I hoped to be pleased. Now I own every desktop part I worked on before I left NVIDIA in 2003, from GeForce2 through nForce and xBox, to NV40.

Didn't the Ultras come with 4-pin to 6-pin adaptors? Guess BFG is spoiling me.

Heh, I forgot that Ricercar got your cards Jacob. He wouldn't be able to use them anyway, he needs 4 dedicated molex connectors, and a 300W PSU doesn't have many of those I'm guessing.

Yes, I'll take the molex adapters jAkUp!

Please save me from shelling out $125+ on a new "SLI-compatible" PSU! While dedicated lines aren't available on my 430W PSU, I do have an Antec 510W TrueControl that can work with your adapters to put the 6800Us on fully-separate wiring. Whee!

Nope, the only sound is a gentle wind from the fans.

Yeah, I have 2 AGP 6800 cards. 1 GT and 1 Ultra and they both beep like crazy if the power is unplugged.

My 2 PCI Express 6800 Ultra cards have no speaker and don't make a peep if the power isn't plugged in.
