Default GeForce FX5200 tv-out problem

I get a black bar at the bottom of my screen unless I overscan so much that I cut off a big portion of the other three sides.

I have searched high and low for a solution on this, and have considered trying some custom Vsync settings, etc. Does anyone know if that will even work?

It looks like this is an NVIDIA fix. Can any Nvidia techs out there confirm? Is there a card out there with tv-out(Nvidia or otherwise) that actually WORKS and looks good for watching movies, etc? I have a 42" bigscreen so this makes a difference.

Please see my earlier rant too for more info / opinion.

Hardware/OS setup: AMD Athlon 3000+, GeForce FX5200, Slackware 10.1(2.4.26 kernel), NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174 driver.

Thank you for your support / any advice / sympathy..GeForce FX5200 tv-out problem

I run Mandrake so it may not be quite the same
Make copy of file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Read the xorg.conf man page and create a custom modeline entry in the xorg.conf usually found in /etc/X11
Go to the nvidia site and get the latest driver either 7174 or 6629 i have used both
Also down load the readme from the nvidia site and read how to set twinview up
this will tell you how to run the card to get a tv out.
You will also need to find out which address on the card is your video out or are you going to connect directly using a dvi cable?
Once you know hich address yuor tv-ouy is you will have to specify it in the xorg.conf file.
If you make change to your xorg.conf and they fail simply drop in to console mode and recopy the backup of your xorg.conf back then startx with either the X or startx command.
Also if x fails to start you can look in the var/log directory to see why in Xorg.0.log file
hope this helps,if not i will post my xorg.conf file

Paul dutot,
I am new to Linux and run SuSE 9.3. I am having problems figuring out how to get TV Out to work on my FX5200. I have read the ream me file but It's a little difficult for me to understand clearly. If you could give me your Xorg.conf text that applies as an example for me to follow that would be awsome. Thanks!

I too am having problems with TV out and can only search every 60 seconds and am having no luck finding answers. Can anyone post basic instructions on what it takes to have a TV as the primary and only display running XFree86-4 and Debian 2.4.27 under GDE? Thanks.

Sure thing, I have an FX5200 and I am running an LCD monitor for my main, and tv-out for the other.

Works great except for that damn black bar at the bottom.
