hehe

I have "nv" because that is the only way I can get X to start. Putting "nvidia" causes the infamous "No Screens Found With Usable Configuration" error.

I am compiling, erm, recompiling 2.6.11.7 as we speak ... Had to do it over, cuz I forgot to uncomment the INSTALL_PATH=/boot line in the Makefile.

I found out why the kernel module wasn't building and its because I did a make mrproper which cleaned out the source folder thus not making it "configured" so the installer couldn't find some of the req`d modules to complete the build. After doing a make oldconfig and then re-running make all, the nvidia installer completed. But still wasn't able to start X ...

So as soon as this compile finishes again and I get booted into 2.6.11.7 .. I will try reinstalling 7174 and see what happens then.

Stay tooned ...

WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

I done did it ... Persistence Pays.
I beat on it and beat on it and beat on it -- Until I finally got it.

This may not have been the easiest or the most correct way to go about it, but this is what I did.

Slackware 10.1
Kernel 2.6.11.7
Built the kernel using: make mrproper && make defconfig && make menuconfig

From here I made sure that ext2 and reiserfs and vesa/vga were compiled INTO the kernel and everything else was set as a Module if possible.

The I ran: make all && make modules_install
And waited

Once that finished I copied/renamed the .config, System.map, and the arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot/*-2.6.11.7

CD'd to /boot and made my symlinks .. Double Checked my lilo.conf
then ran lilo- v to make sure all was written to the mbr.

Did the 3-finger salute and booted into my new kernel -- Once I got booted into my new kernel I proceeded to install/build NVIDIA-1.0-7174 by

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run --kernel-name=2.6.11.7 --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.11.7

Edited my xorg.conf to make sure I had my monitor settings correct according to recommended specs from my manufacturer and then changed my vid driver from "nv" to "nvidia"

And here I am ***FINALLY*** 1280x1024 24-bit 60hz nice fast non-sluggish graphics.

Thank-you for everyone's help ... I am pretty sure I would have long since given up had it not been for the tips, ideas, and suggestions.

Default Re: Slack 10.1 Kernel 2.6.10 Nvidia 1.0-7174 wont build ...

By the way, you dont need to do make mrproper && make defconfig, a properly configured kernel shouldn't give you problems especially in Slackware.

You also shouldn't need to use --kernel-name=2.6.11.7 --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.11.7 commands as it knows where to look when you do make modules_install.

Remeber if you do make mrproper again it will delete you .config file for your kernel configuration, then you'll have to reselect all your settings.
