Default DirectX 9 will be released soon

We may see it as early as tomorrow:

Quote:
Microsoft has found some mercy in its heart and will finally end the agonising wait for DirectX 9 and is likely to release it tomorrow. With three betas and two release candidates version we saw slowly and surely that DirectX 9 is about to become a fully fledged bird that will help some companies live happier and release DirectX 9 drivers.

The only currently shipping card(s) that support it are Radeon 9700 and 9500 Pros and Amateur, which many will find glistening under the Christmas tree.

Nvidia did present its DirectX 9 supporter, Geforce FX but this card will be available no sooner than February in quantity.

ATI will be the first to benefit from this, since they have been shipping DirectX 9 hardware from September and now they will offer their customers free drivers with full support for DirectX 9 final as soon as it's officially released. ATI is already offering an RC0 version of DirectX 9, its fancy demos and drivers for 9700 and 9500 generations but in about one day it will have the final one ready for its rocking role.

Developers will finally have a real API that they can play with.

Remember that the Inquirer reported this. We all know how reliable they have seemed lately.

Thats a good point but here's my thoughts on the issue:
  • dx9 = it will several months until start seeing games show up on the market that utilize features found within dx9 for now I think we'll just have to stick w/ tech demos.
  • 3dmark2002 = how many of you really believe this is a credible benchmark? With all the controversies of drv optimizations and the benchmark being sensitive to high fsb frequencies, I sure don't.
  • geforce fx = sure I'd love to grab one when it first comes out but then again, how long will take developers to write games that fully utilize its potential including dx9? I'm personally tired of watching tech demos only wishing I could have the same level of detail in a mainstream game. I know this is an issue many developers struggle with because they're trying to cater to the masses across multiple pc platforms but yet utilize the lastest in graphics technologies. This is a gap that graphics manufactures and game companies have been trying to bridge for years now.

Directx 9 is supposedly a lot simpler than 8 was. Points right there...
Command and Conquer Generals will supposedly have 128 bit color, oddly enough. That'd rock. Might be a 'I'll believe it when I see it' thing, but I don't know.

Yeha i'm still on this crummy GF2 but still does the job.. i mean right now there are still many dx 8 based games out there. MS should take a little more time to further refine it if they can . just to kink out any last minute bugs. AS someone already pointed. Games will be coming out sometime after dx9 and will probably ahve to wait a while for them to take full advantage of the API
