PAL/NTSC TV-Out native modes

Hello!

Can somebody (perhaps driver developers?) tell me if it is possible to build up a modeline that will put the TV-Out display into 'native' resolutions for NTSC and/or PAL? I mean primarily 720x576 and 720x480. Also can the TV-Out encoder do 'interlaced' modes natively, as on Matrox cards, or it always includes that 'frame smoothing' stage that reduces the framerate from 50/60Hz to 25/30?

My primary target is to get a high-quality TV-Out mode that can be used on my barebone with an on-board MX440 card.

If this is possible in theory, but not with current drivers, can somebody give me a few pointers in the right direction? What TV encoding chip are GeForce cards typicaly using, so that I can look for datasheets and info.

A long time ago (~before versions 4xxx) I've used a few modelines to get 'native' TV resolutions (not framerates though). But after some version upgrade it started to report "invalid TV mode" so I had to limit myself to 800x600, which is bad - because image scaling happens twice it introduces noticeable distortion into the image.

Perhaps the recently introduced tvout modes: 576p (100Hz PAL) / 576i (50Hz PAL), 480p/480i and so on can help. (you need to replace PAL with 576i)

This sounds very intresting. Where am I supposed to change PAL to 576p for instance... in my x-conf?

You need to replace PAL with 576p but your TV really needs to be a 100Hz model, there also exists 720p and so on for HDTVs check the README file for more info and a list of all modes.

after searching this forum, I think this thread comes closest to the subject I'm interested in.
I have an MX4000 with TV-OUT. I only use the TV-OUT, I have no monitor attached to my HTPC.
I use xine to display the output from vdr (DVB broadcasts).
Living in the UK, I need an interlaced PAL-I output for my TV, but using the modes described in the ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...664/README.txt document I only seem to get interlaced output. Also the picture gets choppy when any quick movement is on the screen.

So, I would like to try the 576i (50Hz PAL) mode. Could you be a bit more specific, maybe give an example of how to specify this mode in my XF86Config?

Or... does anyone have any other ideas? I really just want a basic PAL-I interlaced output, I'm guessing that must be a pretty simple requirement for a modern graphics card.

I've also been looking at getting my tv-out to run try 576i, but I can't find an XFree86 ModeLine that will work.

Always end up with either 604x480 or 800x600 display
