Default 6800 ultra broken after i mounted watercooling

Does anyone have any idea why my Aopen Geforce 6800 Ultra stopped working after i removed the fan and heatsinks, and connected my watercooling kit and heatpipes on it?

Aren't normal heatpipes good enough for it?

I used the same watercooling kit on a 6600GT without problems...

What problems are you having exactly? Did you crack the die? Did you bust off a cap?

maybe some of ur water dripped on it...or u just accidentally hit it when installing and killed/shorted it out. tough luck..but keep trying..unmount and mount the watercooling back on again and try it out..

Did it work at all after you put the new stuff on? Or did it die while running? Sounds to me like you broke something during the installation of the heatpipe.

Wipe the core off and see if a corner is chipped - they chip easily even with the shim.

Sorry that i didn't give a very good description.

First, the computer started, and windows booted. But because of some other problem that occured after i installed the card, windows rebooted with bluescreen when windows splashscreen disapeared (when GUI is supposed to be loaded). I thought this was a because of troubles with the new card, but it turned out to be a problem with a HD. Anyway, after some reboots, the screen didn't turn on any more. And the PC-speaker started beeping at POST. Then after a while, there was same reaction everytime i turned on the computer. 2 very fast beeps, and 8 beeps after that. I read that 1 long and 8 short beeps are supposed to mean "no VGA card present", so i suppose the 2 very short beeps are supposed to be 1 beep. In other words - the computer doesn't find any VGA-cards.

I also testet the card in an other computer with same result.

I connected the fan and everything, to make it exactly like it was when i recieved it, and still it doesn't work. Now i have returned it to the store i bought it from, so i can't do anything more.

Of course - i may have scratched something when connecting it - but I was very careful, and did not notice anything. I also checked the card's surface very closely, and could not find any scratches etc.

The heatpipes i used are fool-proof. Same as these.

The only thing i could think of was that the heatpipes did not cool enough - but since the card in the link above is cooled with similar i suppose it should be a problem.

Wouldn't i smell "burnt" if that was the problem anyway? No smells at all... :P

Regarding water: I did spill water, but that was outside the case (controlled..). If anything would have gotten wet, it must have been the motherboard.

My question is: Are the heatpipes good enough? Or does 6800Ultra require additional cooling on RAM for instance? I hope the new shop will give me a new card - and of course - i still want to watercool the new one as well, but I don't want to screw the new card also...

Ok, so the problem is solved. Still sounds to me like somthing to do with how it was installed screwed everything up. Maybe not though, could have just been coindidence. Or maybe like you said, the heatpipe wasn't efficient enough. I've never seen one that small on a 6800 Ultra. Most of the otherones are huge and they cover the RAM too. Was the one you used designed for a 6800 Ultra? So they took back your card no questions asked? Did they even look at it? Good job returning a card with a voided warranty

Here is the kit i have. It does only say "supports virtually all types of ATI and NVIDIA VGA card".

I haven't spoken to the shop yet, just returned it and hope they don't do anything more than test if it's working or not. But are you 100% sure we loose all waranty if we replace the cooling stuff?

The instant you remove the stock heatsink you void the warranty. You could have done anything to it to wreck it and then get a free new one or your money back. As for that kit you bought for it, it looks way too small to be able to dissipate enough heat on a 6800 ultra. But that said, I've never done watercooling so I may be wrong. Someone else around here probably knows though.

Hey GeeZuZz, you mentioned you had that kit on a 6600GT? I'm thinking of getting that for mine. What temps did you end up getting? I have a leadtek OC'd to 570core, 1.1 mem and it hits 80 under load and 40 idle with stock cooling and 2 80mm fans blowing directly onto the card under load.

I have my choice of those water blocks (2 block kit with the smaller chipset block and ram heat sinks) for $36CAN or the VF700 for $48CAN. I've heard very good things about the VF700 but nothing on the ZM-GWB1. I posted a new thread about it but no one has responded. Thnx.

No that's enough for the core. The ram does not really need to be actively cooled. There shouldn't be any problem with that cooling system as long as it covers the entire core. Even if it was running too hot it would still post fine as it takes time for it to warm up. Is the card getting any/enough power through the 12V connector? Test another AGP card in the slot without the water cooler. Otherwise I think the card is wrecked. It might be the AGP slot that wrecked the card too and that's why it doesn't work in the other mobo.
