From the (vague) symptoms you describe, I'm having the same problem. Check out http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=49798 and hopefully someone will be able to help us. BTW, I'm running slack 10.1.

Hi,

My graphiccard is an ASUS Geforce 6600 EN PCI Express. I'm using the 2.6.11.4 kernel provided by suse and here are the Xorg0.log file and my xorg.conf file.

Does anyone have a solution ?

Thanks.

The attached patch should help with X startup problems on em64t systems with 4GB of memory (or more, i.e. SWIOTLB configurations) using SuSE 9.3 (e.g. Linux 2.6.5-7.147) and Linux 2.6.8 kernels. To patch 1.0-71714 and install the updated driver, please follow the instructions below.

# sh /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7174-pkg2.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-7174-pkg2
# patch -p0 < /path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-7174-1258475.diff.txt
# ./nvidia-installer -n

Zander,

I applied all off your patches 2, but look at the thread i'm referring to in my previous post: there r others with the same config, but no go at all with the newer drivers! It's definetely a bug here...

I'll post u the link again, zander: take a look there! (the coincidence is narrowed down i believe: em64t and a 6600GT pci-e is a no go!)

dschaefer: u can allways try to comment out dri in your conf, cause it's not needed by the nvidia-driver!

Zander,

Mine locks on startx (dual opteron, 4gb ram, 64-bit, PCIe 6600). I tried the patch for curiosity, no difference here either.

Edit: Added results of:
startx -- -logverbose 5 -verbose 5

It seems to be like a normal startup, except for these "WAIT" messages right at the end.

etymxris: are you posting here hoping that zander will personally help u? Or did u post here to help out dschaefer? Not that i'm a moderator, thnk god for that lol! But plz keep your posts to the topic and do not randomly post somewhere to serve your ends! I don't think your prob applies here, cause it's a different problem with different hardware...

I'm not flaming u, but plz stay relevant!

Well this is where the patch is posted. I figured I'd try it out and give it a shot. My post fits the topic anyway (x86_64 on Suse 9.3).
