Question Opengl

Systems specs: PIII 800Mhz
256MB Ram
Geforce fx5200 (From sparkle)
Linux 2.4.19 (patched with lowlatency) kernel
1.0-4363 Nvidia driver version

Hi all,

How do i test if i have opengl hardware acceleration?
I've tried glxgears, which runs but at max: 1500 frames (in 5 sec).
Is 1500 fps slow for this system?
Because i would like to play tux racer, i managed to install it with commenting out the glx version check because halted and said that i needed an new glx.h version (Is this included in the nvidia driver?).
It runs but very VERY slow, maybe the new nvidia driver is an solution or is this some other problem with SDL?

Thanks in advance!

Default Re: Opengl

run 'glxinfo | grep direct && glxinfo | grep vendor'. Should get something like:

direct rendering: Yes
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

Run glxinfo | grep vendor

If you see SGI and Mesa, you're not using Nvidia's stuff. If you see Nvidia in there, then you're using the right drivers.

Don't expect amazing performance out of a 5200, especially given the rest of your specs.

Mmm no opengl hardware support for me, just mesa.
I've looked @ my kernel config and i saw that i included the wrong agpgart drivers! :S So i'm including it right now, but i've yust one question:

I've found the link:
Link

and read that i have to install the mesa 3d drivers, i assumed that it was an old howto because i thought i've read somewhere the opengl drivers are included with the nvidia-driver setup.

So my question is: Do i need to install mesa or not?!

Thank for the reply in advance!

That's definitely an old doc you found there. For example, the module is now called "nvidia" and not "NVdriver".

This is the howto you should be using:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...174/README.txt

It's a bit long, but you only need to worry about the sections that apply to your distro.

The nvidia installer usually knows what to do if you have Mesa already on your system. Just don't put Mesa on after installing the nvidia drivers, or your opengl won't be accelerated.
