Default Sound problems on Biostar ideq200P + Debian Sarge

Biostar says that the IDEQ200P has:
Chipset NFORCE3 150
Audio Realtek ALC650, 6-Channel Audio

The output of lspci on Debian Sarge -->
0000:00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce3 Audio (rev a2)
Subsystem: Biostar Microtech Int'l Corp: Unknown device 8212
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 185
I/O ports at d400 [size=256]
I/O ports at d800 [size=128]
Memory at ec001000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2

Dmesg output ->
i810: NVIDIA nForce Audio found at IO 0xd800 and 0xd400, MEM 0x0000 and 0x0000,
IRQ 185
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode.
i810_audio: Resetting connection 0
ac97_codec: AC97 codec, id: ALG96 (Unknown)
i810_audio: only 48Khz playback available.
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 Unable to map surround DAC's (or DAC's not present), total channels = 2

I do get sound when I run the Gnome sound preferences applet which plays wav files associated with certain events. But if I run any other sound app I get various msgs like "sound card not configured, /dev/dsp not available, check for some other program which is blocking the sound card etc.

This may be a Debian issue, but in trying to troubleshoot I am a bit confused about the whether the sound driver has to be nforce3 audio or Realtek ALC650 - or is ALC650 built into the nforce3 chip? There are audio drivers for Linux on Realtek website too. I could not find any hardware description docs about the nforce3 chipset at nVidia.

If some one can enlighten me on the hardware or software issues here I would be delighted!

Thanks,

bakki
