Default AGEIA to Develop Physics Middleware for “PLAYSTATION®3”

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/press_release.php?aid=8899

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – May 17, 2005 – At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), AGEIATM Technologies, Inc., the pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics for games, today announced that it will develop powerful physics-based middleware using technologies based on AGEIA's NovodeX physics software for the "PLAYSTATION®3" game title development environment.

AGEIA's NovodeX physics software is designed with a multithreaded architecture, making it ideally suited for unleashing the power of next-generation platforms. As a result, some of the world's leading game title developers and publishers have concluded agreements with AGEIA to create physics-rich game titles using AGEIA's physics technologies.

"We're proud to offer AGEIA's physics technology to help developers create compelling content for "PLAYSTATION®3", said Andy Keane, vice president of marketing for AGEIA. "PLAYSTATION®3" delivers some incredible capabilities, and our developers are energized by the opportunity to develop middleware for this powerful next-generation platform."

About AGEIA

AGEIATM Technologies, Inc. is a fabless semiconductor company and the pioneer of hardware-accelerated physics for games. Its flagship product, the PhysX processor, is the world's first dedicated physics processing unit – a completely new hardware category. The PhysX processor and supporting software deliver the processing horsepower to calculate real-time interactive worlds. Developers can define these worlds to obey the laws of classical physics, or create their own physical laws that make their game a unique, hyper-dimensional experience.

AGEIA seeks to ignite innovation in the games industry by working with leading developers, publishers, add-in board vendors and console manufacturers to deliver the next generation of physically immersive entertainment. Consumer add-in boards and systems equipped with the AGEIA PhysX processor and games that take advantage of the technology will be available in late 2005. For more information visit www.ageia.com.

AGEIA, PhysX and NovodeX are trademarks of AGEIA Technologies, Inc. "PlayStation" is a registered trademark of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. All other products are trademarks of their respective companies.

A as of yet named Xbox360 game will also be using it.

Guys, this is neither a physics engine ala Havok 2 nor is it a add-in card. This is a software suite ala DirectX9 but for physics instead of graphics. The cells with still be doing all the actual work. And no this won't work with the Xbox360 much like DX9 won't work with macs. It will be specifically programmed for the Cell. With that said I wouldn't be surprised if Ageia programmed physics middleware for Xbox360 either.
